Intellectuals can be Stupid too!

19 Jan

There was a time when a four year degree meant something. It was respected, and academia used to be respected. Intellectuals, if they were smart, would stay true to their counter culture narrative. We always think “George Carlin wouldn’t have been a leftist anymore.” Who knows? Whataboutism are definitely a good exploration and curiosity in an essay.

But honestly, intellectuals are usually inside the parameters of what culture represents, or as the tired phrase goes, culture is downstream of politics. They can push their ideas onto students and influence the next generation of thinkers. I usually liked the teachers I met and talked to and saw them as equals. There are the English teachers, but even as an English Major, I understand your frustration. I hate them too.

I’m only half kidding. But that’s for another time. Intellectuals, like Salman Rushdie, was someone I usually enjoyed and read and thought he was smart. He still is. He expected the sway of American politics in 2016. But what is more important is how intellectuals are not respected anymore.

Maybe it’s why academia is another horrible ghetto that even I know is another trap, as mobs of children become demons and ruin teachers lives with cancel culture, breaking the line between who controls the classroom and not. Science Fiction writers from the 1950’s to the 80’s, knew all too well about intellectual ghettos. They wanted to entertain and with big ideas, too. Is talent rewarded? No.

It’s more about who you know, right? It’s why writers flocked to New York because that’s how writers could get published. The problem is, if you don’t pay your dues, you won’t be good.

You have to pay your dues, either way, and it might not be striving for an agents attention. Intellectuals were never big on being entertainers, so why should both exist? It’s to differentiate who wants to entertain and those who want to preach rhetorical dates they learned previously.

History professors use dates to tell what is true and what they think is correct. Because it’s easier to put a date to History, like the Battle of Thermopylae because it’s relevant, and created the idea of nations banding together against a common cause. But why is History relevant today when History keeps repeating itself?

If Intellectuals are very smart, why do some of the things they say, resemble complete stupidity? Here’s an idea to consider.

Is Marxism a good idea to teach people who don’t have a single clue as to what happens in a Communist country? When Karl Marx created the idea in the late 19th century, who didn’t seem like a stupid person said, “This seems like a good idea” it probably was trying to help out the poor who didn’t have access to the wealth that others were born in. Yes, while this is a profoundly smart man, Communism only works on paper. If Marx was in a creative writing class, it would be adopted by Science Fiction writers only to point out it doesn’t work, as the government would always be the bad guys, implementing social order over individual beliefs.

The problem identifying what came when actual governments wanted to use Communist logic to run an entire government didn’t get the joke Karl Marx was implementing when he wrote the Communist Manifesto. A great con, and if it was a con, then Russia and Venezuela fell for Marx’s theory. It remains that anyone who believes in Communism does not get that it was a theory taken to its logical conclusion.

Fiction writers couldn’t have come with a dumber idea than Russia embodying Marx’s theory of Marxism, which would later become Communism. Essentially some would argue that Communism doesn’t follow Marxist belief in wealth distribution, because like all ideas, people, including governments, can willfully misinterpret an idea without ever reading the definitions of said theory, and people don’t want to share. According to Britannica’s definition of Marx’s origins on Communism, “Marx declared that philosophy must become reality. One could no longer be content with interpreting the world; one must be concerned with transforming it, which meant transforming both the world itself and human consciousness of it.” (Marxism. https://www.britannica.com/topic/Marxism) Marx wasn’t just fine with Marxism being an idea, which goes to say, Marx wanted a reality very much like virtual reality can do today for gamers. Marx’s influences were “Hegel, Johann FichteImmanuel KantAdam SmithDavid Ricardo, and John Stuart Mill.” (Marxism. https://www.britannica.com/topic/Marxism).

So, is Marx stupid for thinking this would be a good idea? That depends on you, but personally, history proves that Marxism didn’t work, and maybe Marx knew that. But like all writers and thinkers, he would never be able to live long enough to take the blame or recant his original ideas, because a person will never take the blame for human suffering if they can deny suffering exists. If in the quest to solve problems Marx created more, is the creator to blame?

But don’t get me wrong, smart people can be stupid too. But it’s all based on relativity, and what knowledge you are allowed to know or seek. There is the Internet which has unlimited access, and no one bothers to search for a true meaning, who’s really at fault? Maybe dwindling curiosity is to blame, but to blame human society for not researching every little thing is not right either. But when unlimited internet access is becoming a premium and not a right, then corporations are to blame too.

The fact is that stupid people can be smart too, and never enter a college campus. But even stupid people know when enough is enough. The road to hell is paved with good intentions, as the saying in Virgil Aneid puts it “facilis descensus Averno” ( https://sites.fas.harvard.edu/~classics/poetry_and_prose/Aeneid.6.124-141.html) What scientists want are not what most humans want either. If society should eat bugs, then I’m not going to eat bugs nor should you. Bugs eat each other, and where have they been before we eat them? Gross. And is this idea born out of intellectualism or tribalism? Probably both, but tribalism doesn’t rely on science to make eating bugs right either. So, who is stupid and smart here can be assigned on an individual or corporate level.

Intellectualism is definitely for elites as entertainment is for the masses, but if the problem is that smart people can be stupid, the degree in women’s studies is worthless then. Why not just explore a prominent career as an independent content creator, when they don’t spend half the time researching or sourcing exact quotes, and put it within the articles or put in the description box to link so that the reader or viewer can fact check them. It’s not enough to put it on a screen, but also keep good notes too.

So, to fix stupidity is a stupid idea, because stupidity allows you to grow from your mistakes, and sometimes, put you in jail, and learn the hard way. But also if smart people created communism, then there’s no ideology left to scrutinize that might yet feel hollow and fraudulent and hypocritical. The point is, being stupid is what might feel smart to someone else. You don’t need an intellectual to tell you what is stupid, because intellectuals get it wrong, too.

I think this picture sums it up.
