Nintendo Switch will not Survive the Console Wars!

I know that a lot of people do like the Nintendo Switch, and I was not an early adopter of the system, but I do have to give the Nintendo Switch credit for bringing Nintendo players into the 21st century. Not like it ever wasn’t a factor, but Nintendo for me always had a reputation for being family friendly. I do think there is a case for Smash Bros being a party game, for nostalgia reasons, but also Mario Odyssey is the most enjoyable Mario game I have played since Super Mario 3. Here we are going to cover the Nintendo Switch, and its future in the video game market.

Now, what has made the Nintendo Switch a reasonable system to keep on you is the portability factor, because God forbid if a fire happened, and you can’t pack up your XBOX, save for your 5TB memory dock, you can pack your Switch up and play on the road to your hearts content. I do like the Switch, for that reason, but also, when traveling, you can play on any television you like, in a hotel, and keep playing on the road. Much like a laptop.

As a Mac user, I don’t really play games on the computer, but I’m not against PC players, and can respect there decisions either way. I have come to the conclusion that when PC players upgrade their PC; it’s like upgrading your car parts. It’s time consuming and a strain on the wallet too.

As I am not mechanically inclined to spend money on a PC, I do like the systems as it is already prepared for me. I know I know, PC players, I hear you when you say, “But systems don’t have the best graphics.”

That’s relatively my choice and as a guy who has other things to do, and think about, graphics are low on my priority. I do realize when something has very good graphics, and as I owned a PS4 Pro and One S, I can appreciate the way something looks even if it’s not at a higher quality. Although I am not a retro gamer by any means, my idea of it is “If you can fool me on a handheld, and make it passable, then I’m not going to complain.”

Doom Eternal is a great example of how the fun factor eclipses the way you would look at a game on other systems. And Panic Button did a great job on all the ports, while I am a little critical of Youngblood on Switch, I had no illusions as to what I was playing in terms of graphical downgrade. Even after I played it on the XBOX One S, it still had some graphical details missing. So, I think Youngblood had some problems, anyway. (Still waiting on Bethesda to drop the hammer on New Order and put it on the Nintendo Switch to complete the Wolfenstein Saga.)

So, portability is one detail to remember, but also, it’s about how a game can be ported and still remain as cool and fun as it can be. The Switch is the equivalent of the Gameboy, portability wise, but also the strength of a PS3 or XBOX, which I think is what made the Switch such a strong candidate for porting games is the challenge for developers to see if it can work with there games.

Bethesda studios, seemed to lead the charge for ports, as it was taking risks that nobody else saw. I know I have mentioned that before, but it bears repeating. There are ports that are truly awful. Monster Hunter is one of the worst ports I have ever seen for the Switch, and Agony holds a tie for being so dark I couldn’t even see on how to complete the mission. I know that game was built around the fact that you had to move through the Dark, but Scorn, on the XBOX series X, is going to take the best part of Agony and run with it. (Plus, if you are a fan of Alien and HR Geiger, then you should play that game. Also, Ill looks good too. Plus, the Day Before looks interesting, as it combines the best graphics of Last of Us and mixes it with the Division. I will keep a close eye on that too.)

As of now, I don’t recommend anyone buying the PS5 and XBOX Series X/S as of 2021, because if I can’t find one, then no one is going to. So, the Switch, as of right now, fits as the fate of the American economy is still yet to be seen as of writing this article. So, it may change, I certainly hope so.

One thing that will hurt the XBOX and the PlayStation systems is the scalping problem that arose, when bots were buying up systems, and selling it for more than the asking retail price. I understand why scalpers are bad, but eBay still for me remains a great place to sell items, because it helps me make money and a profit. But even I didn’t buy the systems from eBay, as I can tell a scam too. According to T3, Smarter Living, “Taking it true that the Nintendo Switch Pro will be released in the next financial year (that’s April 2021 through to April 2022), and that gamers are going to face months if not years of a scalper-driven resale apocalypse from today, thereby leading to gamers literally giving up on the next-gen Sony and Microsoft systems, then right now it looks like Nintendo Switch Pro is going to be perfectly positioned to welcome them with open arms.” (Jones, Robert. “Nintendo Switch Pro’s plan to rope-a-dope PS5 and XBOS Series X exposed” Feb. 6th, 2021. https://www.t3.com/news/nintendo-switch-pros-plan-to-rope-a-dope-ps5-and-xbox-series-x-exposed. Found Feb. 7th, 2021). But we’ll see what happens if Nintendo can make a move where the scalpers have ruined the industry for both Sony and Microsoft.

If they don’t beef up the graphics of the Nintendo Switch, and create a portable system that can be on the level of PS and XBOX versions, it might not survive the next generation hardware wars. If they don’t at least push for 1080P and 4K graphics undocked (meaning in handheld mode), it might look like Nintendo will not become a dominant player in the video game wars. It might be a place for indie developers to take there games to, but AAA content does matter. It might be a great system to port older games on, like the PS3 or XBOX 360, but if Nintendo doesn’t make AAA content available, it might fail.

As of writing this, I am aware that it is trying out cloud system gaming options, and while I am in support of this, and it may help the Switch have some extra life, it may hurt it in the long run, because you may not have Internet to play the higher functioning games, like Hitman 3 and Control.

So, it’s hard to say if the streaming service for Nintendo Switch might work, because it has a hard time connecting to the Internet outside of your home, too. So, that may just break anyone from ever using the cloud streaming service game capabilities. It may help keep them afloat as Sony and XBOX duke it out, but if they can’t upgrade the system hardware and make it as strong as the mainline consoles, Nintendo may not be relevant again. I want Nintendo to succeed, but that would require them to become competitive again. Having other games ported to the Nintendo Switch was the best option they could have done, but now they need to push the Switch to its limits and make sure they are still a viable choice for a console in the gaming arena.
