Art and Culture 22: The Problem of Proscribed Thought

In Art and Culture, any artist, had to go to a place to experience there interests. Creatives, who write fiction, go to bookstores, to see what books are released from there favorite authors, or went to libraries to check out books they have heard about or not committed to buying. The pleasure of sitting down in a bookstore and reading and then waiting until the author writes the next book. A painter goes to a museum in order to have a fresh experience or wander through at the imagination men have given us. Sometimes museums borrow different painters to give there exhibit class, and also promote the beauty of paintings long before the time we were born.

What isn’t lying is what we find in fiction that speaks to us, or the way a painting can speak volumes on a painters influence. But if all you see is the same paintings or read the same authors, there is no room for more interpretation.

Even I know that people dig on the Brain Herbert Dune novels, but as a fan of the series, I had to read them, and loved them and consider them cannon next to Frank Herbert’s original vision. Proscribed Thought would tell you that the prequel books written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson was bad. That’s the “trust me bro” logic that doesn’t work for people. If people lived on “trust me bro” logic books would never be written, but also, “trust me bro” is a form of Proscribed thought.

But if you only have one type of vision to fall back on, it’s not going to help an artist create something new. But if the Proscribed thoughts are only available, what does that mean. Does black always look black, or can our interpretation of the color black mean it’s not entirely evil.

In religions, the faithful are used to dogmatic practices. Christians believe Jesus rose up from the dead, because he was dying for all of man’s sins. When Nikos Kazanzatkis portrayed Jesus as human as well as Divine, then later adapted into the film by the same name, it created a scandal, as Jesus ordered Judas to tell the Romans and betray him. While Jesus was on the cross at Golgotha, but an angel comes down to save him, and alter the fate of his death. After saving him, he leads a life with Mary Magdalene, has a family, and right up at his death, we find out Satan was tempting him to sin internally and dream up a life away from his death on the cross.

He was still dying, and was giving into temptation. Christians were angered by this, and in France, a religious zealot blew himself up in the theater, in protest.

To me, when I saw the film and then read the book, I was still firmly resolved in my belief in Jesus as the savior of mankind, while allowing myself to be enthralled in the poetry of Kazanzatkis’s book and Martin Scorsese’s film adaptation.

Now, if we are only allowed one way of through or making one form or vision, then we are stagnant. If Christians were afraid of the Last Temptation of Christ, then they should have done research and debated the book and film on its ideas entirely.

While this is all relevant to the argument, does silencing one form of opinion only make it more valuable, and banning art more interesting.

This is the duality of the problem of Proscribed Thought. If I only read Stephen King, I would not look at the surrounding culture of books and the wealth of writers that came before or contemporaries who offer more influence and give me depth behind a subject I don’t know even existed. Proscribed Thought is not wrong think, either. It’s what we believe, and we have the right to believe what we want.

If I were just the same person I was at 18, then nothing would change and I wouldn’t strive to consider all opinions, good or bad. Because if you don’t hear everyone, then we are living in Proscribed Thought.

People can call me a criminal all they like, but does that make me a criminal? No, because my enemies don’t know who I am, let alone want to hear what I have to say. If I only listened to NPR and CNN, then I wouldn’t even consider what Infowars has to say. I reached the Proscribed Thought limit of CNN in 2017.

I wish the world operated like Footloose where the good guys won with logic in a courtroom, proving there enemies wrong, and then having a happy ending. But people are too caught up in Proscribed thought to care what I or anyone else would have to say, and delegitimize my thoughts for Proscribed beliefs. Proscribed beliefs are not wrong or right, but they deal with what you think on a day to day basis.

I get that people choose to remain ignorant, but if you don’t question your own bias, then who are you to say you are “well balanced.” Or at least hear the argument, think about it, and then decide for yourself if it’s good or not. I would argue, you are just as biased as the enemies you paint as biased. Always what happened to cultivating diverse opinions if they only come from the New York Times or Fox News. Alt Tech provides and outlet for people like me and everyone a chance to speak our minds. We can have our own thoughts, and that’s why Proscribed Thoughts change from day to day, and consistency is the bedrock of art and opinions. Art can talk about all or none of politics, or what politics is related to the art, or story, itself.

If freedom of speech is allowed, all can be mocked, criticized, but it’s how you learn to deal with criticism is how art and culture will benefit and art will thrive once again.
