Art and Culture # 26: Video Games Replacing the Cinema

15 Mar

-For the Uncensored!

To me, cinema meant an extension of the filmmaker and his personal view on the world and what he sees it. But the rest of this is now about another medium that has grown from the 2D experience of Mario to the haunted gorgeous details of Last of Us.

If Cinema will decay, what will take it’s place? Video games help the player feel the extension of the creator and the world he sees with his fingertips and eyes and dialogue that can sometimes be accessed with a click of a button. For me, the cinematic video game is Last of Us, Beyond: Two Souls, and Alan Wake. These three video games represent the epitome of story telling and the way video games can reach the height of how movies used to be for the average cinema goer. It to me is the gold standard on how video games should match a cinematic feel while being the best video games that combine a personal vision and big budget extravaganza. It’s hard to compare but the death of cinema is how movies have lost there personal vision, and appeal.

Who wants to sit in a cinema, with a scary movie, where the person in the theater is sleeping? It’s nice when you don’t want to see the movie, at all, but it’s still a nuisance for anyone in the theater. Then the people talking gets me, every time. When I play a video game, I don’t have to worry about other people unless I’m playing online.

For me, the video game represents the new cinema, where much of the time the player is investing in the world the designers create from a computer. GTA 5 is sardonic in the same way captured the hypocrisy of the modern era, while telling a tale of friendship, betrayal, business, and even digging in on how unimportant both legacy and social media are.

What Alan Wake, Beyond: Two Souls, and Last of Us have in common are the characters who are swept into a grand tale to help them overcome pain, loss, and how they deal with that pain. All three characters, Joel, Jodie, and Alan, all have to be taken on a journey to save those they love, accept there gifts, and moving on from traumatic experiences to become new again. What the three aforementioned games do give us is the ability to experience a world covered in darkness, and Alan’s only weapon is a flashlight, to fight off the demons that want to keep him from finding his wife.

Beyond: Two Souls has the ability to blend a cinematic look while giving a player the chance to make decisions they wouldn’t. The character, Jodie, goes through a lot, as she is dealing with the psychological damage having an entity, that protects her, but follows her through the highs and lows of her life. It’s a game that blends psychosomatic cinema with a heartfelt journey of a person trying to find herself and where she belongs in life.

Take Joel, in Last of Us whose own tragic circumstances in Last of Us regarding the death of his daughter Sarah forces the player to make hard decisions that require you to do things you don’t want to do. While Last of Us is heavily scripted in what the player will do, the player must do it regardless, building up a mental toughness. You can make good decisions and bad decisions in video games, like in Metro Exodus. What Beyond: Two Souls lets you create the dialogue as the action will play out, but in Metro: Exodus, actions decide what the rest of the story will play out at the end of each chapter.

With Beyond: Two Souls, it makes sense that story can take up so much story telling techniques that can let the player control what you do and what the world can dictate within the television screen.

Now, with Alan Wake, the game’s atmosphere dictates what the action can do. Alan needs to fight off creatures in the dark with a flashlight, and it results in the dark figures exploding. This seems like a metaphor for how Alan has to fight through his subconscious in order to achieve his goal of finding his wife.

Now, Alan Wake and Last of Us, use other ways to help build the cinematic world with notes that Joel and Alan find along the way. Joel finds notes that help him build clues as to what he will face next in the world, while Alan in Alan Wake finds many clues that point to thoughts that he might have forgotten, or the world that would help him save his wife.

Much of what comes as no surprise to anyone, Alan, Jodie, and Joel all have to fight through there fears, as much of the frightening worlds they inhabit teeming with opposition to stop the player and much of it requires the player to move through uncharted territory all through your own actions. You can play however you want. Beyond: Two Souls, The Last of Us, and Alan Wake represent the testimony of how narrative plays apart of how gamers can interact with video games.
