Doom Eternal: Ancient Gods Part 2: Review

18 Mar

-For the Uncensored!

I was trying to avoid the official trailer for the second part of the Ancient Gods DLC for Doom Eternal. I really couldn’t take it and I decided to watch it. When I saw it, my doubts were cleared away, as I knew the teaser trailer hinted at a war between the Doom Slayer and the Dark Lord. But man, I am not looking forward to people playing this game on Ultra Nightmare modes. I will enjoy there tears later on as I complete the review. Picking up right after the cliff hanger of Ancient Gods, Part 1, when the Doom Slayer, Flynn Taggert, resurrected the Dark Lord, which turned out to be a mirror image of the Doom Slayer. (Before we start, this is spoiler heavy, so if you haven’t played it, leave now. You have been warned).

The night before the release, March 18th, 2021, XBOX, PlayStation, and PC fans would have to wait one more day, myself included. I wanted to stay up and play at midnight, but it wasn’t available, and I decided to just wait until the morning to see if it was available. It wasn’t. This did not really sit well with me. Even Black Ops Cold War was released at midnight, but th’t’s not really a problem. If the world we knew

Now this needs to be said: First of all, I thought, “how kind of unimaginative for Bethesda to do this.” I mean, they set it up that it would be the Doom Slayer, so you wouldn’t be surprised, and not like the surprise is still any better, one side says, “Yeah, but maybe Marty should have come up with a better idea of how to present the Dark Lord, and they put everyone through crunch to get this shit done,” and the other side says, “Shut up, it’s a Doom Game.”

What happens is fairly simply put together. After the Dark Lord is resurrected…the first thing the Doom Slayer does is load his super shotgun and try to kill the Dark Lord, as it doesn’t affect him. “No blood can be spilled in this holy place.” Seeing the Dark Lord represented as the Doom Slayer creates a weird paradox for the player. If you think the Marauder is a match against the Doom Slayer, I can only wait to find out what the rest of the DLC entails. He warns the Doom Slayer “our time will come” and “if you survive this, I will be waiting in the city of Immora.”

As you need to gain passage to Immora, you need to power the gate of Dummun. Already, the first level is gorgeous, giving you this ruined feel, but also, in this first part teaches you about the new meat hook component, which allows you to travel over huge gaps. Much as the original meat hook attachment allowed you to use enemies as a way to grapple towards them, and finish them off with a glory kill. But here, you can use it to travel.

Also, A screecher demon is introduced in the level of Dummun, where if you kill it, it will buff the other demons, making it worse through your playthrough. You meet the Doom Pup on the way, and he helps you out.

as the Knight Sentinels, hear your call, as you send out a beacon, the Forge of Kings, to help in your cause to fight against the Dark Lord. Along the way, you encounter more buffed enemies, as much of this is now dependent on you using every tool in your arsenal to rip and tear, but also make calculated attacks against each demon. In the World Spear, you encountered a Armored Baron. You have to break his armor with a plasma rifle and then shoot off the cannon on his right arm, which regenerates the armor.

On the way through the Dummun, you also experience how sludge plays a role, as you have to fight off waves of demons while they are all influenced by the Screecher demon. On Hurt me plenty, it’s at medium difficulty, but on Ultra Nightmare, it will take some time to master.

In the opening level, the world spear, you also are given the Hell Breaker, by the betrayer, who says, “My son’s curse has been lifted and I have atoned for my sins.” It’s a sentinel war hammer, that is built on charge, where you press the right direction button, and you jump up in the air and you do a pounce where you knock the enemies into a slight stupor, where they look like a television cartoon when it’s confused, with a small halo around there head, and they stop confused for a moment. It’s a nice addition, but I think the Crucible had more power to it. But it’s a nice function when it charges back up.

Another addition to the bestiary, is the stone imp, where it takes more time to damage the imps, as they are made of stone, but the only two weapons that damage them are the plasma rifle, and the sentinel hammer. The sentinel hammer is going to come in handy for the stone imps. Plus they roll toward and away from you, looking like sonic. Hugo Martin wasn’t kidding when he was going to make a gamer’s game.

When you reach the forge of kings, it helps grant you passage to the world spear. Next a dragon comes to greet you, and takes you off into the distance. You fly high as you see a large blue mountain, and as you settle, you get off like a fucking badass. If you complete the mission, any demon would be destroyed.

You climb up a ruined chasm where you face every demon that wants the Demon Slayers head. After you pass through the mountain, you reach the blue mountain, and the Father, who used to be Vega, says you are worthy, and across a blue ocean, a bridge appears. The slayer walks surround by green lights and you see the entrance with flying dragons around it. The camera pans up as you are a blip on the massive bridge. When you enter, the door opens, and you walk through the light to reach the heart of the mountain. “Not even Urdak gave off readings like this.” Doom Intern says.

When you enter, you scale the inside of the mountain, grabbing on ledges, and there’s a good deal of platforming inside the mountain. You find out the inside of the mountain is a ship. You get the crystal, and you finish the level.

Then you arrive at the level, Reclaimed Earth, you are introduced to the cursed prowler. If he hits you have you to blood punch him in order to break his curse. Ruined Earth is beautiful as you cross across chasms of broken ledges and you have to find your way to the gates of Divvum. Even the loudspeaker fears you as she tells the UAC workers, of an abandoned building, to “leave your workspaces.”

It’s humorous. Each encounter builds upon your knowledge of learning to move out of the way. To move through Ruined Earth you need to kickstart the power again in order to reach the human outpost on earth.  You need to take a train but then put it back into commission by you guessed it, punching it, after you restore the power.

You also face off against the Riot Soldier, which instead of a blue shield that with the plasma cannon can cause an explosion, killing everyone in sight, the yellow shields absorb projectile damage. So, just shoot around them to end their anger once and for all.

Along the way you explore some bombed out areas that are quite dazzling, lots of foliage, as it looks like earth is starting to go back to nature. In a flooded out building you swim through it, passing by fire orbs, underwater. My brain knows that fire, not matter how powerful ca not work. So, that had me shaking my head a bit. But then, it’s a minor complaint.

There’s a sign that says The Chairman’s Club, and its founder is Robert Altman. That’s the then President and co-founder of Zenimax. So it must have been a nice homage to the man who gave Doom another chance.

Once you cross the gate to Divvum, it looks like three rings circling each other, and when you put the crystal in from the ship inside the mountain, you slip through the portal, and that so ends the second level.

The final level is Immora. The sanctum of the Dark Lord. The cut scene covers the way the Dark Lord is covered head to toe in red armor, as the two armies of the Sentinels and the demons are about to face in a final battle for the ages. The Betrayer and the Doom Slayer stare at each other, as they gaze on, as the army of sentinel and demon face off. Even a Mech suit comes into the fray to help the Doom Slayer.

The Betrayer says, “Come brothers, let hell tremble before our might.” When the cutscene ends, the Father tells the Doom Slayer that “if the dark lord is defeated all demons outside his realm will be destroyed.” It almost has that God of War feel. I’m not that hard on Doom because Doom 4 held id back a long time, and so they are just catching there footing. In the distance, the mech suits are stabbing the hundred foot demons to death, and all are buying the Doom Slayer time in order for him to defeat the Dark Lord. As a epic battle is taking place, he is flung through the wall of Immora with a catapult thanks to the Knight Sentinels. The city resembles the way Super Gore Nest would look. The origin of Innova seems far ancient, and far unlike the realms of Argent D’nur.

I did experience one crash, but this was near the end. Before you approach the Dark Lord, you see him leaving in a ship, and I’m like, “Where the fuck are you going?” After a pretty lengthy arcade style battle royale, you jump on a friendly ship, not even getting inside. The brass balls of the Doom Slayer knows no bounds. With your meat hook firmly planted into the ship, you take off. When you jump off the ship, the doom slayer jumps off into midair, meat hooks his way across the gap, landing onto a demon like a cushion, slicing him open.

After you destroy the stone imps protecting the Dark Lord, you jump into the portal, to go and finish the Dark Lord, once and for all.

The final level, The Dark Lord, says, “war is inevitable,” and the Doom Slayer just grips his fist, cause he’s so mad. He’s ready to fight. The Dark Lord says, “Stand and fight. Honor your true God. Fight and show me your true purpose.” If you don’t stop and think about what the Dark Lord said it might not mean anything. He thrives off anger and he wants to have a true match with the Doom Slayer.

So, we find out that the Dark Lord was betrayed by the All Father, and at the end, it’s almost like, “What?” He took off his helmet and when the Dark Lord asked him, “Will you say anything before you strike me down,” and he says, “No.” (Total Rorscach moment, by the way).

We get a nice scene where all the demons are dead, but he falls into shock and the last scene is where the Makyrs bury him on the tomb where the first Dark Lord’s spirit was buries. So, this is quite hilarious. It’s almost like it sent him back to the beginning of Doom 2016. It’s quite an achievement when I said, “no fucking way.”

I went through quite a lot, and even then, I had to take it down to the easiest difficulty. So, yeah, with the story out of the way, the overall presentation, sound design (I could hear the grunting of the soldier demons with crisper sound quality), but I hope this isn’t the end of the Doom universe. It’s probably one hell of a way of saying, “Fuck you” but the Corrax phrase at the end says, “May your sword never dry, and may we never need you again” rings true. I guess it’s a nice way of letting the Doom Slayer rest.

It’s kind of like how Link is always called back to save Hyrule when it’s in danger. It’s probably one of the funniest call back to video games you could imagine.

What a finale to Doom 2016, and Eternal, and I hope that id software always raises hell again to bring back Flynn Taggert, to kill demons, when we need him once again.

Plus wait for the end, it was a nice treat.

            Final Analysis: 5/5

Combined Score with the first DLC, Ancient Gods Part 1: 9.5.10
