Art and Culture # 29: The Stupidity of the Oscars 2021

23 Mar

-For the Uncensored!

-Editors Note: This is the 29th article, not the 28th. For those listening to this, I apologize. My mistake.

It’s hard to imagine if anyone will watch, because creators now do not have to enter Hollywood or a publishing office to make there dream come true. It’s worse when you have to fulfill some imaginary demands from a studio when there’s no creative expression involved in Hollywood.

I guess it’s not the most abhorrent thing you could say. Indie video game developers make just about enough money as movies do. I saw the trailer for Wonder Woman: 1984 and I thought it looked very bad.

The Snyder Cut of Justice League looks better and at least has a vision where Marvel films, after Ultron, failed to captivate me into a movie theater. It’s rather obtuse to think that movies are still part of the conversation. If I were being nominated for an Oscar, or anything, I would just come in plainclothes.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone went to the Oscars in dresses when they were nominated for “Blame Canada” for there mega hit film version of there hit Comedy Central TV show South Park. Plus, they were high, and when they came down, they said, “Oh no.” Going high to the Oscars wasn’t a good idea, but it might help, but then, if going to an award show, but I think that’s the last time I remember enjoying the Oscars.

What is bad taste is even nominating Mulan for Costume Design and Visual Effects, after Disney filmed in a location that took place thirty minutes away from a Uygur genocide camp in China. It seems like the Oscars has to bend the knee to China at every second. David Fincher best director nomination for the period piece drama Mank, about Howard Mankowitz writing Citizen Kane, and the personal hurdles he faced writing the screenplay, suffering from alcoholism, drying out unsuccessfully, flashing back to his days in the movie industry, and his personal issues that created one of the greatest films of all time. It’s not kind to anyone except William Randolph Hurst. Jack Fincher, David Fincher’s father, wrote the screenplay, was oddly missing from being nominated.

Oddly enough, Tenet was the best film of 2020, and it’s only nominated for its visual effects. Which doesn’t surprise me. I didn’t mind the film that much, but again, I thought it was a 5 our of 10, being that it did everything right, but it just seemed too easy for me to figure out with certain plot points. It is still the best thing Christopher Nolan has ever written. At least that should have been acknowledged, at least.

It’s hilarious that the sequel to Borat is nominated, as I couldn’t will myself to watch it, being that the first is still an inspiration in how comedy was taken to its ultimate nexus in that film. Sacha Baren Cohen has made such an interesting transformation with his dramatic acting, as I saw his portrayal of Eli Cohen, an Israeli Spy for Mossad, inspired me to like Baren Cohen more. After Borat, comedy just wasn’t that good.

As a final note, t’s really hard to not pretend that movies mattered to me in the last two years. Last of Us, 2, and Days Gone, was by far the only thing that mattered to me, and Doom Eternal, but that was the dichotomy for gamers. For me, it was about finding myself and finding what the true meaning of an award means. If an award winning product is what we cared about, most people would never watch superhero movies either. There was something grand about seeing all the stars that were nominated for awards, dress up in ties, clean up, and make a little speech about it. But the way art has devolved into political diatribes is the pretentious BS Hollywood avoided for so many years.

When someone yells on the stage “workers of the world unite” it only provides one set of context. It’s not about craft, how hard the person worked to achieve the award, but virtue signaling. It used to be about thanking the crew and the staff, and should be. Lots of money was spent to make there dreams come true. Having a political identity doesn’t mean you are the greatest artist ever. If you care about people, that should matter, but while Joaquin Phoenix speaks about meat packing plants, it also does serve as no more a defeatist nature to winning an award. But when an artist wins they usually have some bullshit message to spread, as it’s there time to win.

If boomers and Gen-Exer’s were honest about the movie business, many screen writers would stick with plays or go into video games. If the Oscars wants to survive, they would nominate video games, because every time Hollywood tries to take a video game property and translate it into film, it never works out.

To me, Assassin’s Creed is lifted from this set of criticism, because the studio that made the game, produced and financed the film. But this year it’s not the same. Why dress up if you are only going to be in hotel rooms, accepting the awards. It doesn’t make sense, but nothing about Hollywood ever was or is supposed to make sense.
