DOOM ETERNAL…paid skins?

6 May

For the Uncensored!

In a video game, nothing is free anymore. Nothing you ever pay for comes in the box with the CD or the digital copy you download. When game companies found out they could charge for more, it was an ever spending arcade that you didn’t have to leave your house for. It’s why people have been turned off of games entirely. If I’m going to have to grind endlessly and clear out camps or sneak through only to find out that I could spend more money to get a better gun, (which happened in Tom Clancy’s superb Wildlands open world action adventure game) it’s when the brain starts to ask very simple questions.

The problem: Bethesda and Id studios are now selling the skins that players would have to grind constantly for. The skins, which you can put on the Doomslayer, It’s damn near three hundred dollars. They were selling the collectors edition bundle for that much, and people instantly sell them on ebay. So, again, it’s the question my inquiring mind has to ask.

example of skins (earned through campaign)

“Why the fuck would they do this, brain?”

It’s simple as I mentioned before. It’s about money. It doesn’t matter if you are a great gamer or not, or even have the time to do it, paid DLC expansions are a way to keep people invested in games. I see this as nothing more than mocking the player for wanting to know the ending of a game that that the player will not be able to experience themselves. Again, it stands to reason why youtubers would support this. Midnight, a Doom Eternal youtuber, has close ties with the company and has interviewed Hugo Martin on his channel endlessly.

So, again, don’t believe your favorite youtuber when they support the company and keep making you pay for character skins that don’t matter either. And this isn’t about midnight at all. I guess when you get free things from the company you are going to support the company policy. I guess, to play devil’s advocate, they want to sell the skins. It’s greed,  but I understand it. You gotta make a profit. But if we can attack Naughty Dogg for there horrible business practices, you need to attack Bethesda as well.

I know I’m not going to be invited to Quakecon, because I’m not part of the inside crew. Fine, maybe that’s why it makes me laugh when people like midnight would support people paying nearly 300 dollars worth of skins that players would have to earn through playing, and wasting there time. I get it, Bethesda and Id want to make money. It’s not that hard. Money is good, but essentially, Id went back on their word after Doom Eternal would not be a pay to play system

It’s the same when players play difficult modes, and you can press against a wall and slip through the game, and avoid having to play the game itself. Might as well just sell difficulty achievements so you don’t have to play it, too.

Again, it’s hard to pick on Naughty Dogg without picking on the rest of the gaming industry. At least with Naughty Dogg there product isn’t visually flawed or you can just push the character against the wall and then slip through the level, or pay your way to complete the game.

Otherwise, this is a bad move Bethesda and Id. But make your money, but don’t expect me or my readers to pay.

Doom Eternal’s Difficulty Controversy

31 Mar

-For the Uncensored

I know the Doom Eternal Community is talking about this, but the thing is, how can something be difficult without making someone quit gaming forever? I see that gamers need that Dark Souls type of thrill that would make me want to quit games forever. Yes, I do want to enjoy games. I get the idea of playing a game on a harder difficulty and getting cool skins, but players should want to play that harder difficulty when they are ready. I’m probably the only person who has legitimately sat down to try and play the Mein Leiber difficulty in Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus. I have only gotten to Section F, and that’s not that far. So, I do understand that many gamers want a thrill when they play a game. They want to show that game who’s boss, but never walk outside and get some air, or try and socialize with people.

Just kidding, gamers. I know you guys talk to your parents. But that’s not good enough. Again, I’m just yanking your junk here. Don’t get too comfortable with it, though. I’m not a gentle soul.

Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZ8fPeZiI9k

So, you are probably wondering how that previous paragraph ties into this idea of wanting a harder game difficulty. Think of it this way. Some guys beat there dick raw. It’s a fun time, but you don’t do it all the time like that. So, you use lube, and lube is lowering the difficulty in your video game.

Hey, playing games should be fun, and we all understand what fun should be. I want to enjoy a game first before I try the harder difficulty. So, why would you torture yourself on the harder difficulty. Trust me, I played Uncharted 4 on the highest difficulty the first time, and I have never played it since. I do think it was challenging and fun, and not a bad send off, but Uncharted 4 should have been three. Just saying.

So, the thing is, do we all have to play on a Seikero: Shadow dies twice level of painful torment or should Id have stuck to there guns and made it just as difficult as the base game? The Ancient Gods Part 1 is tough, and I see why the community was upset.

Not everyone can be From Software, and most game developers shouldn’t do it. Everyone should have fun when they play games, but also, don’t feel like you have to play things on a higher difficulty.

If you really like the game, then play it on a higher difficulty. We should all have a choice to play games on a higher difficulty. Serious gamers should go for that level. I’m not going to assume everyone plays on a higher difficulty. The problem is the defeat. Everyone sees that “you failed” or “You died” sign and it usually pushes people away from trying to play on a higher difficulty.

I think one bucket list game that I have to try and beat is Dark Souls, because the story and the dense horror atmosphere is worth it. Once you get over dying a lot, that’s not so bad. But then, I just might be denying how hard it is. Most likely, if you had to put a gun to my head, and say, “You have to play this or you will die,” and if I had enough time, I would probably play Wolfenstein 2’s New Colossus’s Mein Leiber difficulty.

To sum it all up, the higher difficulty should be an option for everyone, after you play the base game, but I wouldn’t want a hardcore gamer to not play it on the hardest difficulty, because it gives them meaning, and power. They used to give medals for playing on the higher difficulties. But if they don’t anymore, that’s probably why I don’t want to play higher difficulties.

But I guess that’s the completionist in me talking. I think I like the idea of taking a big risk for a reward, not just for the ideal of doing it. That’s just how I see risk. But to me, your game difficulty is what you want in video games. There are no rules to any form of art, and how you want to experience a piece of entertainment. You play as hard or you have as much fun as you want. It’s your life, King/Queen.

Ending of the Ancient Gods Part 2 Explained

25 Mar

-For the Uncensored!

Doom Eternal Ancient Gods Pat 2 Ending

If the ending of Ancient Gods Part 2, and for those who haven’t yet played the game, the recap is that Flynn Taggert, our fellow Doom Slayer, has finally vanquished evil and with that, he goes to sleep with the world that he saves. But the ending where he is buried once again near the Blood Swamps, makes you think a little bit. It does make you consider that Id is following true to there form. If you think the Doom Slayer is dead, I think you might be overthinking it a little. I think if you allowed the Doom Slayer to live on, it might mean bad news for those who wanted to keep playing as Flynn. What I do think is clear. It was an inside job between God and the Devil to bring down the Doom Slayer.

It doesn’t seem as simple as a video game, like Mario chasing after Princess Peach. That’s kind of a simplistic way, but the deeper attitudes posed within Doom Eternal is that this isn’t the type of narrative that one reads when they are young. If the impossible defeat comes from looking at the souls the Doom Slayer vanquished, this does bring up an interesting question

Did the All Father and God work together to putting the Doom Slayer on ice? Did it mean that bringing back the All Father, the Dark Lord, lead the Doom Slayer into a trap?

This does mean that the Doom Slayer is a tool, a weapon for when the balance of light and dark are upset and the meaning of the Corax tablet does bring up a pretty good point. “May the blood on your sword never dry and may we never need you again.”

It seems like we all want some magical happy ending for our characters and it seems like what the world wants is not what individual creators want. It does seem to fall in line with Doom 64’s ending and how the Slayer was reinvented by the Makyrs and Sentinels. To me, if there are no demons, then the Slayer can rest while the world is rebuilding again. Considering that you have to have a time of peace before another upset happens in the Doom Universe. When you remember the Doom Slayer’s journey began and how much he has lost, considering that we never get to see the background with his family, I don’t think that would make any difference. The Doom Slayer already lost that part of his life, and the Doom Slayer is corrupted by his rage and how he was betrayed by Vega and the UAC. Then it leads to his imprisonment. It seems like Id was doing something far more subtle with the narrative, and this is a first for Id.

I’m not going to make the claim that the Doom Slayer is dead, but this doesn’t mean the end for the Doom franchise. I do have one observation: I think maybe they should have saved the Ancient Gods for a third game. Also, they should have used the DLC for a Betrayer back story. I know this might not be original, but it makes the most sense.

I do think that the Doom Slayer has been through a lot. It seems like this might be a time when they do something experimental with the franchise. I do believe they did write themselves into a corner, but maybe they can work better with some time, but then, this is just the beginning. I do believe that Hayden still won after all this time. When he brought back the Dark Lord, it was the Doom Slayers fault that he was on ice, but in some cases, the Doom Slayer would have done it anyway.

Only here, is where the Doom Slayer knew he was bested by both god and the devil. If he is just another instrument, maybe it will be another game that lets us see where he faces off against the armies of heaven and hell again. But for now, I say that Flynn isn’t dead, and it brings us back to 2016, when we might just see the Doom Slayer’s coffin opening back up again.

What do you think about the ending of Ancient Gods and Doom Eternal. Let me know in a DM or comment below. (I don’t think you need my permission to comment or talk to me about what I say in the articles, so fire away.)

Doom Eternal: Ancient Gods Part 2: Review

18 Mar

-For the Uncensored!

I was trying to avoid the official trailer for the second part of the Ancient Gods DLC for Doom Eternal. I really couldn’t take it and I decided to watch it. When I saw it, my doubts were cleared away, as I knew the teaser trailer hinted at a war between the Doom Slayer and the Dark Lord. But man, I am not looking forward to people playing this game on Ultra Nightmare modes. I will enjoy there tears later on as I complete the review. Picking up right after the cliff hanger of Ancient Gods, Part 1, when the Doom Slayer, Flynn Taggert, resurrected the Dark Lord, which turned out to be a mirror image of the Doom Slayer. (Before we start, this is spoiler heavy, so if you haven’t played it, leave now. You have been warned).

The night before the release, March 18th, 2021, XBOX, PlayStation, and PC fans would have to wait one more day, myself included. I wanted to stay up and play at midnight, but it wasn’t available, and I decided to just wait until the morning to see if it was available. It wasn’t. This did not really sit well with me. Even Black Ops Cold War was released at midnight, but th’t’s not really a problem. If the world we knew

Now this needs to be said: First of all, I thought, “how kind of unimaginative for Bethesda to do this.” I mean, they set it up that it would be the Doom Slayer, so you wouldn’t be surprised, and not like the surprise is still any better, one side says, “Yeah, but maybe Marty should have come up with a better idea of how to present the Dark Lord, and they put everyone through crunch to get this shit done,” and the other side says, “Shut up, it’s a Doom Game.”

What happens is fairly simply put together. After the Dark Lord is resurrected…the first thing the Doom Slayer does is load his super shotgun and try to kill the Dark Lord, as it doesn’t affect him. “No blood can be spilled in this holy place.” Seeing the Dark Lord represented as the Doom Slayer creates a weird paradox for the player. If you think the Marauder is a match against the Doom Slayer, I can only wait to find out what the rest of the DLC entails. He warns the Doom Slayer “our time will come” and “if you survive this, I will be waiting in the city of Immora.”

As you need to gain passage to Immora, you need to power the gate of Dummun. Already, the first level is gorgeous, giving you this ruined feel, but also, in this first part teaches you about the new meat hook component, which allows you to travel over huge gaps. Much as the original meat hook attachment allowed you to use enemies as a way to grapple towards them, and finish them off with a glory kill. But here, you can use it to travel.

Also, A screecher demon is introduced in the level of Dummun, where if you kill it, it will buff the other demons, making it worse through your playthrough. You meet the Doom Pup on the way, and he helps you out.

as the Knight Sentinels, hear your call, as you send out a beacon, the Forge of Kings, to help in your cause to fight against the Dark Lord. Along the way, you encounter more buffed enemies, as much of this is now dependent on you using every tool in your arsenal to rip and tear, but also make calculated attacks against each demon. In the World Spear, you encountered a Armored Baron. You have to break his armor with a plasma rifle and then shoot off the cannon on his right arm, which regenerates the armor.

On the way through the Dummun, you also experience how sludge plays a role, as you have to fight off waves of demons while they are all influenced by the Screecher demon. On Hurt me plenty, it’s at medium difficulty, but on Ultra Nightmare, it will take some time to master.

In the opening level, the world spear, you also are given the Hell Breaker, by the betrayer, who says, “My son’s curse has been lifted and I have atoned for my sins.” It’s a sentinel war hammer, that is built on charge, where you press the right direction button, and you jump up in the air and you do a pounce where you knock the enemies into a slight stupor, where they look like a television cartoon when it’s confused, with a small halo around there head, and they stop confused for a moment. It’s a nice addition, but I think the Crucible had more power to it. But it’s a nice function when it charges back up.

Another addition to the bestiary, is the stone imp, where it takes more time to damage the imps, as they are made of stone, but the only two weapons that damage them are the plasma rifle, and the sentinel hammer. The sentinel hammer is going to come in handy for the stone imps. Plus they roll toward and away from you, looking like sonic. Hugo Martin wasn’t kidding when he was going to make a gamer’s game.

When you reach the forge of kings, it helps grant you passage to the world spear. Next a dragon comes to greet you, and takes you off into the distance. You fly high as you see a large blue mountain, and as you settle, you get off like a fucking badass. If you complete the mission, any demon would be destroyed.

You climb up a ruined chasm where you face every demon that wants the Demon Slayers head. After you pass through the mountain, you reach the blue mountain, and the Father, who used to be Vega, says you are worthy, and across a blue ocean, a bridge appears. The slayer walks surround by green lights and you see the entrance with flying dragons around it. The camera pans up as you are a blip on the massive bridge. When you enter, the door opens, and you walk through the light to reach the heart of the mountain. “Not even Urdak gave off readings like this.” Doom Intern says.

When you enter, you scale the inside of the mountain, grabbing on ledges, and there’s a good deal of platforming inside the mountain. You find out the inside of the mountain is a ship. You get the crystal, and you finish the level.

Then you arrive at the level, Reclaimed Earth, you are introduced to the cursed prowler. If he hits you have you to blood punch him in order to break his curse. Ruined Earth is beautiful as you cross across chasms of broken ledges and you have to find your way to the gates of Divvum. Even the loudspeaker fears you as she tells the UAC workers, of an abandoned building, to “leave your workspaces.”

It’s humorous. Each encounter builds upon your knowledge of learning to move out of the way. To move through Ruined Earth you need to kickstart the power again in order to reach the human outpost on earth.  You need to take a train but then put it back into commission by you guessed it, punching it, after you restore the power.

You also face off against the Riot Soldier, which instead of a blue shield that with the plasma cannon can cause an explosion, killing everyone in sight, the yellow shields absorb projectile damage. So, just shoot around them to end their anger once and for all.

Along the way you explore some bombed out areas that are quite dazzling, lots of foliage, as it looks like earth is starting to go back to nature. In a flooded out building you swim through it, passing by fire orbs, underwater. My brain knows that fire, not matter how powerful ca not work. So, that had me shaking my head a bit. But then, it’s a minor complaint.

There’s a sign that says The Chairman’s Club, and its founder is Robert Altman. That’s the then President and co-founder of Zenimax. So it must have been a nice homage to the man who gave Doom another chance.

Once you cross the gate to Divvum, it looks like three rings circling each other, and when you put the crystal in from the ship inside the mountain, you slip through the portal, and that so ends the second level.

The final level is Immora. The sanctum of the Dark Lord. The cut scene covers the way the Dark Lord is covered head to toe in red armor, as the two armies of the Sentinels and the demons are about to face in a final battle for the ages. The Betrayer and the Doom Slayer stare at each other, as they gaze on, as the army of sentinel and demon face off. Even a Mech suit comes into the fray to help the Doom Slayer.

The Betrayer says, “Come brothers, let hell tremble before our might.” When the cutscene ends, the Father tells the Doom Slayer that “if the dark lord is defeated all demons outside his realm will be destroyed.” It almost has that God of War feel. I’m not that hard on Doom because Doom 4 held id back a long time, and so they are just catching there footing. In the distance, the mech suits are stabbing the hundred foot demons to death, and all are buying the Doom Slayer time in order for him to defeat the Dark Lord. As a epic battle is taking place, he is flung through the wall of Immora with a catapult thanks to the Knight Sentinels. The city resembles the way Super Gore Nest would look. The origin of Innova seems far ancient, and far unlike the realms of Argent D’nur.

I did experience one crash, but this was near the end. Before you approach the Dark Lord, you see him leaving in a ship, and I’m like, “Where the fuck are you going?” After a pretty lengthy arcade style battle royale, you jump on a friendly ship, not even getting inside. The brass balls of the Doom Slayer knows no bounds. With your meat hook firmly planted into the ship, you take off. When you jump off the ship, the doom slayer jumps off into midair, meat hooks his way across the gap, landing onto a demon like a cushion, slicing him open.

After you destroy the stone imps protecting the Dark Lord, you jump into the portal, to go and finish the Dark Lord, once and for all.

The final level, The Dark Lord, says, “war is inevitable,” and the Doom Slayer just grips his fist, cause he’s so mad. He’s ready to fight. The Dark Lord says, “Stand and fight. Honor your true God. Fight and show me your true purpose.” If you don’t stop and think about what the Dark Lord said it might not mean anything. He thrives off anger and he wants to have a true match with the Doom Slayer.

So, we find out that the Dark Lord was betrayed by the All Father, and at the end, it’s almost like, “What?” He took off his helmet and when the Dark Lord asked him, “Will you say anything before you strike me down,” and he says, “No.” (Total Rorscach moment, by the way).

We get a nice scene where all the demons are dead, but he falls into shock and the last scene is where the Makyrs bury him on the tomb where the first Dark Lord’s spirit was buries. So, this is quite hilarious. It’s almost like it sent him back to the beginning of Doom 2016. It’s quite an achievement when I said, “no fucking way.”

I went through quite a lot, and even then, I had to take it down to the easiest difficulty. So, yeah, with the story out of the way, the overall presentation, sound design (I could hear the grunting of the soldier demons with crisper sound quality), but I hope this isn’t the end of the Doom universe. It’s probably one hell of a way of saying, “Fuck you” but the Corrax phrase at the end says, “May your sword never dry, and may we never need you again” rings true. I guess it’s a nice way of letting the Doom Slayer rest.

It’s kind of like how Link is always called back to save Hyrule when it’s in danger. It’s probably one of the funniest call back to video games you could imagine.

What a finale to Doom 2016, and Eternal, and I hope that id software always raises hell again to bring back Flynn Taggert, to kill demons, when we need him once again.

Plus wait for the end, it was a nice treat.

            Final Analysis: 5/5

Combined Score with the first DLC, Ancient Gods Part 1: 9.5.10

The Joy of Open World Games

4 Mar

-For the Uncensored

Source image: https://gamerant.com/best-playstation-4-exclusive-open-world-games/

Before March 2020, when the world experienced a pandemic of epic scale, video games became a best seller during the last year. You couldn’t find an XBOX Series or PS5 to save your life, but today, all this time at home has let me appreciate open world games. Days Gone was a great example of how to take an open world game and blend Last of Us with Grand Theft Auto, as you rode on your motorcycle through the North West, trying to find your lost love two years after a zombie plague was unleashed on the world. If you are looking for a happier ending, Days Gone definitely had that, and packed a huge emotional punch along the way. It death with the unpleasantness of a plague, while understanding the emotional core of Ethan, who has to survive and is dealing with survivors guilt. He visits a grave where he thinks his wife died in a camp, talking to it, like he would anyone who visits a grave.

The first ten hours were really hard to play, but after that, it catches on like a lightning bolt. I think, like a novel, and how the first fifty pages are the buildup to a long complicated plot, is how Days Gone was for me. I think it works on the first play through, but even I played that and Last of Us 2, because I have written my own zombie story, and had to check in with it to see what both stories had to say.

Ultimately, open world games do provide a calming relief. When I beat Final Fantasy 15 for the first time last year, it wasn’t so bad. I loved the way Noctis and his friends became monster hunters, worked for there meals, did favors for recipes, and how I avoided some monster fights in order to camp for the night. It was like playing a new game. I think if you are working full time you can’t play open world video games. But also, I think I had the time for the motonous nonsense of doing missions, because I wanted to give it a try, too.

But I do think open world video games can last you for an entire lifetime, and through the journey, can help you see things you haven’t before. Like how Noctis running away on an island ruined his world and how he didn’t face his fears head on. And Open World games are the best at providing challenges you haven’t seen before. And Open World games are the best at providing challenges you haven’t seen before. Like scaling mountains or traveling the high seas.

Don’t overlook the power of an open world game.

The Value and Devaluing of Medals for Video Games!

2 Mar

-For the Uncensored

In the notion of being a “completionist” and achieving all the medals a video game can offer, sometimes to me, it’s just not humanly possibly. There are a few examples of this. If you are the only person who has won the coveted Mein Leiber trophy on Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, I am envious. You have to play the game at one sitting and you can’t stop or save, which is absurd and the farthest I have reached in Wolfenstein 2 is near Section F, near the end, where I destroyed the radio communication, and I died when I peeked out for too long. Section F is only at level 2, of the whole campaign. But it seems absurd to just play a game and be a completionist, when you should be doing other things. I don’t blame people for wanting to get every possible trophy they can in games, but I think streamers can take that challenge more than regular gamers should. Games should be enjoyed, unless you really like the game enough to get all the medals.

Again, you can do that if you like, but if you don’t get the important things done in your life, being a completionist is no better than owning a stamp collection. It’s not bad, but if you can’t cook or clean up the house, that’s another thing you need to do. Also, having a life and getting a girlfriend is important, too. Having a family. At some point, having the medals in video games is not going to solve your emotional turmoil. Just because you played every side quest in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, doesn’t mean you made any money from it, unless you stream.

So what if you got every medal in Seikiro: Shadows Die Twice, and you didn’t think Seikiro was hard, then go ahead. Just remember to make some money while you do it too. If you don’t do something else in your life, no trophy in a video game is going to matter when you have no life skills to live beyond a screen. If you don’t have a family, you might go bald and end up like Tim Pool.

Let’s all laugh at Tim Pool’s baldness, for a second. (Don’t worry Tim, bald guys need love too)

But seriously, it doesn’t matter if you have every medal in a video game. Video games are not real life and having a real life means being interested in things outside your bubble. Exercising (not on the Wii U or the Switch). Reading a book printed on paper. Playing a sport (not on fifa). An instrument (not guitar or DJ hero). Shooting and training with a firearm (not in a First Person Shooter game, go ahead and take your pick). Lifting weights (not in GTA San Andreas either).

The digital world doesn’t amount to the substance and pain and beauty real life can offer. If you have no real world experience to back up your life behind a screen, it doesn’t matter how many video game trophies you have. It’s easier to hide behind a screen when you are unhappy about your weight, your lack of social skills, but dealing with it and realizing what you need to do to be happy is what will change your situation in life. A video game medal is a very small achievement compared to creating something that was created by you.

It’s hard, but I know you can do it.

Nintendo Switch Pro Rumored with 4K graphics

23 Feb

-For the Uncensored!

While I have been enjoying the console wars between Sony and XBOX, and in the console war, I do think that XBOX will take the long run over the Playstation 5. Reasons if you like your privacy, you will not want a Playstation 5. They do want to listen to your conversations and then block you if you say “naughty words.”

“Well-regarded Nintendo leaker Nate Drake took to the ResetEra forum (as spotted by Wccftech) to claim that the new Nintendo Switch will be “like a PS4 with DLSS and a more capable CPU”. While we can hardly expect the tiny Switch to compete with Sony’s enormous PlayStation 5 (here’s where to buy a PS5), a 4K handheld device as powerful as the PS4 sounds pretty incredible.” (Piper, Daniel. “The New Nintendo Switch Pro Sounds Absolutely Incredible”www.creativebloq.com. 02/23/21. https://www.creativebloq.com/news/switch-pro-rumours-2021. Found 02/23/21.)

Now, I’m excited by this news too, but sometimes, a rumor might be a rumor, but in some cases, I have to consider the following options: If Nintendo is going to beef up the Switch to handle 4K and all the graphics that come with owning a PS5 or XBOX Series system, this may make me reconsider having any other system. If all they needed was more storage, you can buy more SD storage, but I think the storage component may need to be solved in order for the 4K graphics to make the Nintendo Switch the one stop shop for all video game systems.

It’s beyond time for Nintendo to make there name in the game once again. To prove that they can romp with the big boys while providing family entertainment too. Nintendo made there stake with Bethesda, and I hope Bethesda still continues to give the Nintendo Switch a run for its money.

What is important is to wait and see what the facts may show. While my hat is in XBOX, Nintendo may now enter as the handheld choice if it does enhance the Switch with 4K graphics. But the key argument for me is that storage might just be the factor that dissuades people from buying the Switch, if they don’t push the storage system to meet maximum capacity. A XBOX One S has a 1 TB of memory, so the Switch can take a few lessons from the larger consoles if need be.

I am excited and waiting patiently, if Nintendo does release the new system in 2021. If not, I can wait a little longer, because with post COVID-19 rules, they may make very little systems in order to meet demand. If Nintendo can push out more systems, and not get bought up by bots, and provide console system performance within the Switch, they may just be the Kings of Consoles once again.

But like all rough diamonds, like rumors, need speculation and long thought.

The Doom Slayer and his Weapons

4 Feb

“Violence is the last refuge of the Incompetent”

Issac Asimov said that “violence is the last refuge of the incompetent.” (Forbes quotes on violence.https://www.forbes.com/quotes/theme/violence/)  Well, with the Doom Slayer, these are the tools of which must be used to help humanity in the end, even if another time has ended, and families can not be brought back. And incompetence can be said of one who doesn’t know how to use a weapon in battle, at all. But Isaac Asimov never met the Icon of Sin or a Revenant, so I guess we can give Asimov a pass.

While the Doom Slayer is unmatched and unparalleled in his anger toward the demons throughout Doom, Doom 2, Doom 64, Doom (2016), and finally Doom Eternal, the Doom Slayer would not survive if he didn’t have a bevy of weapons to help him throughout his journey ripping and tearing to save the human race from the demonic horde. Now, there are a basic array of weapons by categories: shotgun, plasma rifle, and the Balista (both use plasma energy), the Rifle, The Heavy Canon, Chaingun, (both use the same rifle ammo), the pistol (sadly omitted from Doom Eternal, but present throughout until Doom 2016), the Rocket Launcher, and the BFG (Big Fucking Gun to fans, and always a last ditch weapon when your shells are exhausted and your fists aren’t enough) have always surfaced throughout Doom’s history. But weapons, if not mastered to a situation, will not save you either.

What makes these weapons a delight to use is that the history of Doom Eternal is linked with weapons that would allow the Doom Slayer to live and tear through the enemy hordes of Hell all the way back to Earth and Mars and Phobos. Flynn Taggert, as he is known in the novels written by Daffyd Ab Hugh, a detail a Doom Slayer far more talkative with action, but essentially a silent protagonist in the games,, weapons also play a major role in the novels too. The weapons hold the keys to the Slayer’s survival. But oddly enough, after the last hellish invasion, the books by Daffyd Ab Hugh are telling.

Arrival at the UAC Facility (undisclosed location)

I was allowed to visit the UAC Center of R&D, which is not as boring as you might think. It’s where many of the famed weapons the Doom Slayer and his Sentinel weapons were then perfected, and even now, it’s exciting to walk through the halls of the UAC. This is where all the murders took place. All the ritual sacrifices. I can’t begin to describe the horror of having to work here without having to speak about what they do. But then, after the hellish invasion that took place, the indescribable feelings I get are haunting. I can’t even blink without sweating. Maybe I’m just nervous.

I meet Doom Intern, who is allowed to talk to me and welcomes me to talk about the guns. He’s unlike most scientists. Rather charming, almost like you could let him fix your computer for you and you give him free pizza.

“Be sure to shoot anything you feel like. If you need any help with camera equipment let us know.”

He’s so oddly chipper, even though Doom Intern, in his moments, seems rather quiet, muted. Doom Guy, Mr. Taggert, was not around to comment, but then getting a word out of him is going to be hard, even for this interview.

The Doom Slayer, as he is known by the world, represents all of the Sentinels wrath after appearing on there shores after the fight with the Mother Demon in Doom 64. The pursuit to protect the world from the armies of hell and even the Kahn Makyr. But while the Doom Slayer, Flynn Taggert, pursues to rip and tear the Demons even with his fist, like they are butterflies and he’s tearing there wings off with panache and careless glee. But with the weapons in Doom Eternal, it’s the only way to destroy the demons, one punch, shell, and BFG shot at a time.

All the weapons will be covered, for all intensive purposes, as I fired more than 15,000 Chaingun/Heavy Cannon rounds, 5,000 shotgun rounds (combat and super shotgun, but did not use the meathook, but saw test runs), 10,000 plasma cells, 100 rockets, and two BFG rounds (30 shots in one single trigger pull). My relationship to the UAC is that I did not pay to shoot these weapons, and nor do they license them out to me. These weapons are still not available on the market for distribution.

The Combat Shotgun/Super Shotgun

The combat shotgun, is a worthy weapon, as the upgrades include a exploding charged sticky bomb shot, and the second upgrade turns the shotgun into an automatic shotgun that with the left trigger winds up the barrels, to speed up the shots and damage effectiveness in combat. Now, the combat shotgun is made from polymer steel, with a grey ash color, and weighs ultimately 10 pounds by itself, without the upgraded mods attached. The pistol grip and the rack are light brown, dark flat earth color. In the Doomslayers hands, it’s five pounds, while in real life, to a noncombatant, it would be hard to use for a first time shooter. Especially to a UAC scientist or a civilian. The barrel and mag tube is made to accept twelve gauge rounds, as they are the most plentiful of the ammunition in the entire game and to the Doom Slayer. The kick to the shotgun is normal, to the Doom Slayer, while holding the shotgun would increase arm strength. Both mods would increase it to 17 pounds. As the magtube for the Combat Shotgun is unlimited, providing no reload delay, and you can dump as many shells into the demon as possible.

The lowest capacity is 16 shells, and upgraded equal 24. The shotgun replaces the pistol in Doom Eternal, but if you upgrade the exploding charged “sticky bomb” shot, you can shoot over 5 charged sticky bombs, and the automatic rotator is unlimited, and doesn’t need to wind down. Many players use the charged shot “sticky bombs,” which it does provide a careful playstyle.

The Doom Slayer can use it in close quarters, with the automatic, presents a close range attack pattern, but it’s clumsy in the beginning to wind up because it will reset the barrels back. Think of it like winding up the barrels, but then it has to charge back up once expended, to cool off. The automatic barrel, once upgraded, has an unlimited pull, as it can expel all the shells and ammo shells can be returned to the Doom Slayer. Is it an interesting weapon, yes, but the next weapon in the shotgun wheel, is the most iconic weapon of the Doom franchise. This next weapon is the fork and spoon and knife of the entire game that prepares the Doom Slayer for the journey he and the player are about to take.

The double barreled shotgun..or affectionately called the super shotgun. The ammo runs at about 9 rounds, as the super shotgun fires two shots a time. Yes, the Super Shotgun. The Super Shotgun is a sawed off double barrel, with a pistol grip, so that the Slayer can use it in close quarters combat. Only now, the Super Shotgun has a meat hook. It’s a shotgun that has outlived the series, and has been a staple in the series, as well as the pistol. The meat hook once fired, latches onto the enemy, can be used as a grappling hook into the demon, to bring the Doom Slayer closer, but once upgraded, the meat hook can light the demons on fire, and can resupply your armor health.

Now, when holding the shotgun, it’s not just a typical sawed off shotgun. The butt of the shotgun is sawn off. It’s about 30 pounds, as the walnut stock is made to handle high grade 12 gauge rounds. The Super shotgun, which is about 13 inches in length, as the barrels are 10 and a half inches, and the butt is 2 ½ inches with black tape wrapped around the butt. The handle is titanium, as gloves are required, but if fired from the hip, it would break a regular person’s hand upon firing. The weight is 50 pounds to the Doom Slayer, but fires over 240 grain shells, as the specifications of the meat hook, pulls the Doom Slayer, as the meat hook at the front of the super shotgun, creates a pull system that respects the Slayer’s weight and size. Plus, to hold onto the super shotgun when connected to the meat hook can toss anyone away, and send them to the hospital. This is a shotgun fir for the Slayer only.

It can be used as a grappling hook to swing you across a level, which helps if you need to escape being surrounded by a pack of demons. The best way is to use it as all three, as it can provide the Doom Slayer with speed, health upgrade, but also a chance to commit a glory kill on the demon, and gain more health. (Fun fact: the reload animation for the super shotgun only appears in Doom 2, Doom 3, DOOM (2016) and Doom Eternal. Sadly the 64 version was not capable of running the animation on the Nintendo 64).

The Plasma Rife/Ballista

The plasma rifle makes a return from Doom 2, as the design was modeled in DOOM (2016) resembled Doom 3’s plasma rifle. It uses plasma cells, and is a good “room broom” gun when you can shoot an energy shield and cause it to explode, blowing the enemy into chunks and disarray. The upgrade, after you shoot it, can create an exploding field, affectionately called heat ray, which sends out a cone, once charged up to three times, and can decimate enemies all around. Horizontal and Vertical dispersion is made to use as a disruptor, as it’s made for center mass shots, never for individual head shots.

Now the design was made to be used by UAC guards, and is about 10 inches in length, but the barrel is meant to house the chemical properties of the plasma and not present any danger to the Slayer or human. It’s square sides are meant to handle over thirteen thousand radioactive chemicals as the UAC handles the storage and faculties of storing ammo within a rectangular stock. It was designed to help charge the beam with instant trigger pull. Together it’s only 12 pounds with the Shock wave attachment, and the small rays around the left and right side are purple. The color and the magnetic properties allow the gun to never overheat.

With this upgrade, the round o ring, the Heat Blast modification, can push back and even stun enemies, and even as you upgrade it, can cause the enemy to stagger and allow the Doom Slayer an opportunity for a glory kill to boost his blood punch ability, and can help gain momentum in the battle. The next upgrade to the Plasma ray is a microwave beam, which is exactly as it sounds. Trigger pull is the same as this time, it doesn’t need to charge in order to use against a demon. Removing the front end of the barrel, and replacing the front end, has a small ball that charges the beam with connection to a target, as it can read the demon’s wavelengths. The microwave beam modification is used to charge, cook, and fry the enemy into bits as well. It’s a sight to see and is more so used for the Ancient Gods Part 1, when a “spirit” inhabits a demon’s body, but you have to use the microwave beam to destroy the spirit. The Heat Blast, is the best upgrade and worthy in a close encounter fight, while the microwave beam is not ideal, as it does limit mobility.  The highest ammo count for the plasma rifle is 250 rounds, that shoot out in balls of light.

The Ballista, which uses the plasma ammo, is an interesting addition to the Doom franchise. In the lore, the Ballista was used by a group of Sentinels against wave after wave of demons. It’s design resembles a manta ray, with fins pointed in, but when charged, the inverted wings push out, and resembled an exposed butterfly. The barrel is in the middle of the Ballista as it is meant to be a powerful excess of power once charged, making a clang sound to represent the shots charged exhale, once released. Overall, holding the Ballista requires skill as it’s 15 pounds in the slayer’s hands, but is over 75 pounds to a UAC employee. It’s twenty inches in length, as five inches is the grip and stock combined, as it resembles a cross bow. A looped trigger hole allows the Slayer to charge the Arbalest and Destroyer Blade modifications. But with each pull alone, it can even send the Slayer backwards, with magnificent recoil. Overall, the length is about 15 inches, When the Arbalest is upgraded, it can be best used on the Cacodemons, as each upgrade can be used to destabilize a demon’s weak points. Trying to hit center mass is the limits a UAC guard can do, as you are trying to control horizontal and vertical dispersion, as the kickback can be used during gravitational acrobatics and a quick getaway.

The Ballista’s second upgrade, the Destroyer Blade, is a heat wave that can slice through most demons, but it does take 5 seconds to charge, but at its base form, stops the Doom Slayer. It’s adorned to resembled a curve, and the argent energy properties help charge the Destroyer Blade to create a long slice to cover a small hallway or room covering more than twenty feet. The deadly sliced shot doesn’t kill most heavy demons at first, providing more danger to fodder demons, and it comes at the cost of movement and speed. This is not the best and ideal way to play through a Nightmare or Ultra Nightmare difficulty. The sheer damage that the Ballista causes makes the Doomslayer, from a distance, dangerous to the demons who pursue him. Once the Destroyer Blade is upgraded, it can create a long wave, as it can kill smaller and wound Whiplashes. This to me, these two upgrades off slow timing in combat, but to advantageous Doom Slayers, the Destroyer Blade is devasting and proves valuable if you have the demons in your sights. Ultimately, the charged shot holds about one round that equal up about 50 plasma shots, and holds a total of seven single shots. Plus, when a charged shot is placed on the Cacodemon’s round orb body, it’s almost like popping a zit. Once the Cacodemon is destroyed, it’s a relief, but the satisfaction level is endorphin inducing.

Heavy Cannon/Chaingun

Now the Rifle category is where a choosy Doom Slayer can play both an offensive and defensive position. The Rifle, or Heavy Cannon, comes with two upgrades. The Heavy Cannon is akin to the Ballista, as it can provide ranged attacks useful from afar, and can provide deadly performance on which upgrade the Slayer uses. With that being said, there are advantages and disadvantages to the Heavy Cannon. Weighing in at over 35 pounds to the Doom Slayer, it’s max weight is 25, which according to the Codex Entry, “A common complaint among users of this punch-packing conventional weapon is the weight, as most of the components are forged in Tungstronium, a proprietary alloy developed to withstand enormous stresses imparted by the optional exploding dart ammunition.” (The Heavy Cannon. https://doom.fandom.com/wiki/Heavy_Cannon.)

It’s also common for accidents to occur. The barrel extender is meant to not mask or hide the shots, but to decrease the chance of blowing up over extended trigger use. The design of the grip is meant to handle shooting at high velocities, as it is an automatic trigger. There is an exhaust sleeve, as it’s meant to cover more gas expulsion, as the UAC had to find more ways to improve their rifles. Vertical Dispersion is easier to hit and Vertical Dispersion can be controlled with a scope, allowing for head shots.

The Precision Bolt, or the scope, offers some of the weakest upgrade if used incorrectly, as it can provide ideal for long range use. Mostly for shooting off weak points on a demon. If you encounter the Arachnotron, shoot its scorpion like tail that shoot lasers, to make the Arachnotron move into melee mode, and you can use a shotgun to weaken it in close encounters. A weak point on a Mancubus, a big tank like demon with two cannons for arms, and if you move in close, he can use the arms to create a quake that can damage the Doom Slayer, shoot both oof the cannons to weaken the Mancubus. Ultimately, the scope, once upgraded, can provide health with a deadly headshot accrued on the poor demons. Once upgraded, the sniper ammo takes less than three seconds to reload, and uses six shots, providing the damage needed to take out the weak points.

But the micro missiles upgrade that will make or break you in the beginning of the game. Once upgraded, the missile launcher doesn’t have to take time to reload, as the launcher, takes more than 5 seconds. Now, 30 seconds to reload is a long time in a combat puzzle in Doom Eternal. Mostly you aren’t going for accuracy moving all the time, and Doom Eternal is not the game to stand still and reload your weapon. While the rifle is automatic, and is not a two or three round burst, the micro missiles are dangerous as it will weaken and damage the demons. Once upgraded, the launcher has an endless chamber where endless missiles flow and damage the target as well.

Exploding body parts seem to be repeated throughout, but this is important in the Doom franchise. Some weapons are made to weaken stronger demons while the weaker imps and soldiers explode with two well placed micro missile shots. So, the upgrades are made for specific times in small arena style battles.

Now the Chaingun, using the same ammo as the Heavy cannon. According to the UAC records, The M220Chaingun is a 7.52×51 mm AE six-barreled autocannon built for infantry deployment. Weighing over 80 lbs, the M220 was conceived as a standard issue weapon for ARC mech-soldiers fitted with exo-armor – mechanized suits capable of supporting a heavier payload. The AE cartridge uses a special electromagnetic casing deigned specifically for the M220’s rail system, which increases projectile velocity and reduces overheating.” (https://doom.fandom.com/wiki/Chaingun/Doom_Eternal) What this means is that the bullet is made to handle a larger caliber which means that it can supply a heavier dose of pain in combat and also give the Doom Slayer more chances to survive.

The Chaingun does provide a complimentary solution to bigger demons. It’s the best of the rifle family in Doom Eternal, and the upgrades provide stellar long range and offense combat solutions. The Chaingun, acrylic black, the phallus, over 20 inches long with one rotating barrel, is meant to shoot multiple rounds and provide steady leverage against the stronger Barons of Hell and Tyrants. The barrel length is over 35 inches long. It is meant to be held at the hip for most humans, but the Doom Slayer can use it as an effective weapon to target multiple demons at once.

While I do adore the aesthetic and the upgrades, the Doom Slayer must not rely on one weapon. Doom Intern asserts this in our interview. One weapon will not work on all demons. The Chaingun, against a Cacodemon, will take less damage, as the Ballista was made to destroy the Cacodemon with three shots. The Chaingun (As an aside, the Ballista is the only gun that does not represent or have a protruding barrel, defying the casual phallic references). What the Chaingun does offer is total annihilation. It can provide you ample fire power and resilience against the forces of hell.

The confusion is settled in combat. The upgrades provide the Doom Slayer with the best options for the combat, if in a heated battle and the Rifle can’t handle a crowd, or the micro missile only irritates the Barons of Hell. The Energy Shield, holding down the trigger, on the left side, near the barrel provides the Doom Slayer the option to sprint while the shield is up. Fully upgraded, the shield, if damaged enough, can send out a wave that damages the demons, but the shield reload time, inactivated, takes about five seconds. The reality is, this is one of the author’s personal favorite guns, and even then, I have to remind myself to use the other weapons in a firefight. Variety is the spice of death, right?

The second upgrade for the Chaingun, the Mobile Turrets, is not two, three, but four barrels that when held down, with the trigger expands the Chaingun. Expanding left to right, with two smaller barrels in the middle and two long barrels on each side. This upgrade can be used against small and strong demons alike, and i’’s so much fun to use. What the worst thing to do in Nightmare mode is to stop and think “Oh, I’m Rambo” and you will die either way. Designed to be the longest barrel of the Doom Slayers arsenal, it proves itself in combat.

Rocket Launcher

So, then we have the Rocket Launcher. The design has a skull on the left side of the barrel, and can provide long range attack damage. If you are fleeing or circling a small level, it does soften a Mancubus or Baron of Hell. At its base ammo limit, the Rocket Launcher holds 10 rounds, at first, and fully upgraded, holds 14 rocket rounds. What the Rocket Launcher does provide is an exploding missile upgrade, which can be used to weaken a marauder when he has his shield up. But as many Doom Eternal players will warn you, the inexperienced noob, is that if a missile is used up close, then it will kill you and the Demon. So, they have made it far deadlier to use, as using it up close held no consequence in 2016.

BFG and Secret Weapon

Now, the last main weapon on the Doom Slayers list, is the one weapon most coveted with the Super Shotgun. It should have a fancier name, and naming weapons is a big task in works of art. Only three words summarize the Doom experience; the letters are not double consonants letters either. Singular Constants pushed together to make one unanimous word in gamer’s mouth laugh with joy. The BFG.

Its meaning is far from technical with grunts. The Big Fucking Gun. Yes, out of all the guns in Doom series, this has always remained a staple in the UAC list of weapons. The BFG, from Doom (2016) uses “ionized Argent Energy” according to the Doom wiki, but in the original Doom for PC, it uses “Energy Cells” which later on, Id changed to represent to reflect the Doom (2016) narrative. What it does provide is a gun that clears out the room, and if hitting an enemy sends a chain reaction, obliterating weaker demons and wounded larger demons. This is death incarnate, as the only demons who are left standing are the Barons and Tyrants.

The BFG holds 60 rounds, but it holds two shots, depleting 30 in a single BFG shot, so the Doom Slayer must use it at careful times of need. You have to be sure when to use the BFG. It can make or save you in battles, and the will to control your trigger finger is necessary in the fight against Hell, as the ammo for the BFG is rare. But when I pull the trigger, it’s almost a sigh of relief once I pull the trigger, because it can help even the odds and let me collect any health, armor, ammo, dropped. It travels as one big green ball, as the best way to use it is from one end of the room to the other.

A secret weapon accumulated through Slayer gate challenges, with reward of six Empyrum keys, unleashes the Unmakyr (pronounced Un Maker), which makes its return from Doom 64. In Doom 64, it could shoot out beams, but in Doom Eternal, it uses smaller orbs that can help clear out a room quickly. It seems nerfed to fans, and while every weapon has its purposes, the Unmakyr is tied into the Kahn Makyr’s heritage, as this was a weapon created by divine angels of death. (Note: the BFG and the Unmakyr share the same weapon ammo, but they are fully upgraded, which is a plus, but use each weapon wisely).

But overall, it seems like the weapons didn’t get that much of a look, but overall, all the weapons are a character as well as the Doom Slayer himself. What can be said is that each weapon has its advantages (the super shotgun, the chain gun, effective power in combat) and disadvantages (the lack of BFG rounds, the UnMakyr’s nerfed power, and the microwave beam and the Slice shot, and the chain gun turrets being too slow at first, but remedied once upgraded) are a imprint on the player who has to navigate through hell and back to stop the demon invasion against the human race. It’s over 25 inches long, and is red and white.

Equipment Launcher

Other weapons are your equipment launcher that acts as a flame belch (flame thrower to provide ammo), and a ice bomb to freeze your enemies, so that you can lay the hurt down. The trigger pull on the grenade launcher is about less than two pounds, at the base, takes more than ten seconds to reload the grenade. It helps not having to throw them or carry them around, as it gives the Slayer more freedom to move and not have to carry extra ammo bags, but also, this grenade cannon also seem to recharge the cannon to create more grenades, but it takes time to reload the equipment launcher. Using this ability comes with a shoulder mounted launcher, that weighs less than one pound, and it can connect to both the right and left shoulder. It’s a slight green color made from the UAC, and it can hold more than just a grenade shot. It was designed to match the Slayer’s strength with his ferocity as each grenade option was to allow the Slayer the movement to become the demons worst nightmare.

Holding it seems rather unimpressive, but the skill comes in when to use the grenades. Also, it was designed to fit either shoulder, so maximum capability is key. The second upgrade which can be modified is the flame belch. The flame belch is a flame thrower that can catch your enemies off guard, stunning them for a moment, and with each shot, armor drops off the enflamed demons, giving the Slayer each chance at survival. It’s best to light more than one demon on fire so that you can receive maximum armor and health.

The next upgrade for the grenade launcher is an ice grenade, as this can provide you a second to lay down more rounds as to make your escape easier. So, for the grenade cannon to create both fire and water, the shoulder mounted cannon creates fusion particles that automatically produce renewable grenades created within the cannon, and prepare the Slayer with more than one option to fight off the hellish invasion of Angels and demons.

The Crucible

One final weapon that’s part of the campaign that can be talked about, which is not part of the weapon wheel is the Crucible. The Crucible has properties to take down a Titan, which Slayer removes from the dead carcass in Taras Nabad. The hilt has 1,500 thread count wrap that only a Sentinel warrior could use, and it’s tailored by the craftsman after the hilt is made from the bones of dead titans. The talisman on the center is the marking that belonged to the Doom Slayer, and holding it weighs less than three pounds, as it’s over seven inches long, with two points narrowing in, signifying the blade’s inactive state. It needs a small coin that opens the swords ability to be used once again, after The blade was originally embedded in the Titan. If not removed properly, the demon will come back to life. The Sentinel Crucible is the antithesis to the Demon Crucible from 2016, which in this case, both are used from Argent Energy. Once reactivated, the blade gives off a radio frequency as the sword is swung, as the echo sliced creates a sonic pressure. Together it weighs less than seven pounds, and to swing it requires the strength of a Sentinel. If anyone else used it, they would die immediately, as the Argent properties would give a normal human being cancer.

The Chainsaw

Another weapon, which is part of the Doom Slayer’s outfit, is the chainsaw. It has been a staple throughout the Doom franchise, but in DOOM (2016) the chainsaw can refill the Doomslayer’s ammo. Also, like the BFG, this can help the Doom Slayer when he’s out of ammo. The Chainsaw was most likely adopted by the UAC to cut wires and technical work in their everyday work application, but the chainsaw, in the Doom Slayer’s hand can give him an advantage in combat. The blade itself is over seven inches long, and it can cut through any demon, but it can not harm Barons of Hell or Tyrants anymore. Due to the increased size and weight, it’s best used against fodder demons, like Zombies, up to Cacodemons and Mancubi. When I use it, I can only think, “They slayer must have used this.”

Final Analysis

Ultimately, you choose your fight plan how you see fit, and today, you can’t be too prepared. Thanks to Doom Intern and the UAC for giving me the time to use the weapons, and spend as much time as I could. I read a lot of UAC material and it gave me more insight as I wrote and conducted the detail of breaking down all the UAC weapons. Doom Intern, you rock!

Art and Culture # 6: The European Union’s meddling with Microsoft’s Billion Dollar Acquisition of Bethesda

3 Feb

Art is the basis of escape. It always will be. When the mortality of Art helps us escape the confines of a world of shit jobs with bum pay checks, when we read, or play video games, we can get away for a moment and become Gods on a quest to kill our families (God of War), three flawed criminals who are so different but need each other in the end (Grand Theft Auto 5), and a man with survivors guilt that is tasked with smuggling a young girl with the cure for mankind (Last of Us) that it’s the final bastion of Art that I, and many millennials and Zoomers had, for a long time that wasn’t corrupted by acrid social justice messages. But now it seems like the EU wants to stop Bethesda’s 7 billion dollar sale to Microsoft because….of reasons.

While the profit margins for video games create successful business ventures, artistic achievements that strive for visual media that far outpace movies, but also put gamers in the hands of the main characters with a controller or keyboard, it creates such a wisdom that the game industry is easy to get into.

Why bring this all up? I think this may be pretext to Bethesda and it’s controversial sale by Todd Howard, a man infamously derided by fans, but the 7 billion sale held out some hope, as many products like Wolfenstein, DOOM (originally created for the Windows system in the early 90’s), Dishonored, Prey, Fallout, Skyrim, and The Evil Within, are also derided and loved by many gamers, for various reasons. Bethesda, its offices located in Maryland, must be given credit for bringing there games over to the Nintendo Switch, and bringing along Panic Button to create more revenue and chances for Nintendo players to pick up there games too. DOOM (2016) ported (translated, to those who don’t know game lingo) over to the Nintendo Switch set the bar for ports, and made the industry take a chance to translate there games over to the Nintendo Switch platform. While games like Monster Hunter was a misfire, Bethesda still remain the best ported games that the Nintendo Switch has ever seen to date.

But why would the EU get involved? Simple, they want money. And it’s easy to deduce the level of bitterness that most boomer EU members feel toward video games. European children are intelligent and while they do read books they also need a release too. If the EU stops Bethesda from becoming billionaires, this is against the principles of Capitalism, and the ability to grow there business and acquire new IP (Intellectual Property) for there company.

Like Hollywood and most entertainment models that strive for sales, games do have an advantage over movies and even comics, is that the fantasy is real and you can play it. Just like books, but with buttons. In the Mass Effect series, you can have optional dialogue with the characters as you can control the dialogue and the way the conversation is ordered.

I don’t necessary blame video games for having messages, because every piece of art has a message, and in some cases, it can’t be helped. If social justice is a cancer that can infect all sorts of media, it has to be pushed back against, and all art can go back to being forms of entertainment while providing some moral hope or blissful fun that most pieces of art can do again.

I want Bethesda to succeed as any game company should, but if Bethesda can’t make money, and the EU wants to stop them, what does that say if I want to make money? Again, the EU is a waste of time, but smart Europeans know this. They are trapped in a horrible system that controls the flow of commerce on working class citizens, taxing them to death, while virtue signaling to migrants, and not enforcing laws to help protect there citizens when they are attacked by said angry migrants.

London knows what I’m talking about too well.

Again, why is this so important? I have to address this because Americans do not realize the problems the EU have caused over the years, and pretending it doesn’t, would only lie to Europe and Americans alike.

But Biden will fix everything okay, right?

8 year ban on becoming a citizen sound about right?

But at least he doesn’t say mean things on Twitter.

Fuck off.

So, the EU has once again proved that it will interfere in art and Bethesda’s acquisition by Microsoft, and this can’t be helped. I can’t help but say to Todd Howard, “This is what happens when you vote with your conscience and not with your wallet.”

            Get woke, Go broke.

Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods Part 1 Review

22 Oct

Another day and another eight months has passed since March 20th, 2020, the day Doom Eternal came out, and while the year, for posterity reasons, is abysmal, the wait for the DLC for Doom Eternal finally arrived on October 20th, 2020. From Id Software and published by Bethesda, it is an allowable excuse to give Ancient Gods a fair play since I had my bloodlust (and broke two controllers) in the process, Ancient Gods seemed like a safe bet. It wasn’t a long DLC, topping at three hours, nor did it feel like Id was taking a break from the critical acclaim and positive player reception they have received this year.

What makes Ancient Gods a turn-off is that it stops at such a point in the story, that it will answer for the release of Ancient Gods Part 2. What is harder to fathom is the deception of how seamless and fluid the controls are, and even on the easiest difficulty, Id is not trying to stop short. What can be said is that the story, as bare bones, continues to thrive on the combat first, and story second, but it does feel light when the DLC is only 4 hours in total.

The overall level design of the Atlantica UAC base, the demon swamp, and the poisoned Urdak, is Id once again showing off their top expertise at level design, and proving that they can create something beautiful while delivering a narrative, which falters, since it is dependent on the part 2, which is not scheduled to release any time soon.

Questions are answered: what happens at the end of Doom Eternal. What became of the Seraphim who helped the Doomslayer in the past? What can be said is the flare that Doom Eternal can still possess. While the Atlantica UAC level is remiscent of a Joseph Conrad story, while the Demon Swamp follows the Slayer to his inevitable meeting with the Dark Lord to resurrect after destroying Urdak, and then following with his battle with Samur, the Seraphim who gave the Doomslayer his armor and heavenly power.

It does feel like a long time ago that Doom Eternal came out, but it does manage to throw every villain you didn’t encounter along the way in the first game. It’s willing to test your limits even if you just want to have some fun. It does break the cardinal sin as this should have been the following for a sequel and not just part of the DLC, which shows that Id is not going to stop as they can do more with the technology than the 90’s could permit them.

But since this is not a full game and only DLC I only rate the DLC 1-5, since it is only DLC. Overall, the graphics, the tone, the consistency in the narrative, straight forward levels, and “push forward” combat can make the DLC an interesting play, but it is only one half of the narrative. The negatives are noticeable, as on an XBOX ONE S, it can show the game chugging along as my 4K captures a few glitches here and there, but it’s a sight to behold. There is a difference in the graphics in the PlayStation Pro and the S, but the XBOX does seem to bring out the rich textures, while the PS4 can be brighter, but that’s just one experience I have had, playing both games separately. Another noticeable difference is the music. After the controversy surrounding the soundtrack, Mick Gordon is not present, and it shows, but the replacement, is not so bad. But it’s slightly off, but composers Andrew Hilshult and David Levy, are fit for the job, since they are behind the hotly anticipated Proteus, which sounds great either way.

Overall Review: 4 out of 5
