Art and Culture # 37: Hemingway did not have leftist views

14 Apr

For anyone who thinks Hemingway had leftist views, really didn’t know Hemingway. If you think Hemingway gender swapping in bed, asking his then wife to call him a woman’s name, that’s not having leftist views. According to Ken Burns, this portrayal of Hemingway should be a a damning expose of how a man like Hemingway acted in bed, is not that damning. The truth is, Hemingway really didn’t have leftist views. Any writer who thinks that he did actually can’t give Hemingway the chance to be who he was. A man’s man. If he hated your writing, he outright told you. It’s because he was unapologetic, and he wouldn’t expect anyone in the future to apologize for him, or explain away his actions (secretly leftists will do that all the time when they do something wrong).

I think this proves that Hemingway would have never  apologized for what he did. No one should, and I invite you to kill yourself if you apologize with a half ass attitude. In this poisonous day and age, 2021, where the media celebrates people’s faults because they need clicks and readers attention, it’s not hard to profit from misery and rage. While writing and craft do not matter to a dying form, like novels, art, Ken Burns wants to show all Hemingway’s flaws, and I can respect him for giving Hemingway depth and personality and showing his flaws. It’s not a “gotcha” moment to not have leftists views, but it’s rather freeing.

The only smear I see is that leftists want to add in bullshit about Hemingway’s views that don’t add anything to the man Hemingway was. Hemingway served in WW1 and was a combat reporter in WW2, and joined in on the fighting and took pride in hunting. Hell, Ralph Ellison sings his praises in the Ken Burns documentary as well.

If you really want to crucify the past, you must crucify yourself. Which I won’t do. If people are mad about the past, go complain and virtue signal to hide your own bad thoughts. Scream about it, because it doesn’t hide the lefts real racism on the inside. Because the past is not clean and it didn’t care about politically correct thoughts, and it still doesn’t. You can’t hide from the past, and you can’t erase or denigrate writers like Hemingway for having troubles and being who he was. The only crime Hemingway committed is being imperfect, and thought crime in 2021, is all the rave.

For 2021, people want everyone’s rough edges to be refined, and people don’t work like that. Having people act in a pristine manner is against human nature. Hemingway will always be read, and even if I don’t like his writing personally, I will defend his legacy because I would want the same done for me. And just because Hemingway was published by leftists, it doesn’t mean he held leftists views. Hemingway was imperfect sure, but for a quote from Charlie Wilson’s war summarizes Hemingway the best: “You can teach a man to type but not to grow tits.”

The Cult of Hemingway

8 Apr

-For the Uncensored!

With much of Ernest Hemingway’s life and adventures that make up much of the cult of Hemingway’s writing, it makes an average reader marvel at the simplicity of writing. Yes, I am not at war with Hemingway’s shadow but nor do I find him a genius, by any means. What Hemingway did with his writing was ignoring what most of his peers, including Ezra Pound and Faulkner did, by complicating the text. Hemingway went for simplicity. “A true sentence.”

I’m not angry at a man who had a bachelors life and had a lot of trust issues, which is common with most artists, and nor does his suicide signify his legacy. A writer committing suicide is probably the least noteworthy efforts of any writers accomplishments. He considered his father weak for committing suicide, and thus would then in turn push himself to committing the same act. It’s common for people whose loved ones to commit suicide to do it as well. So, I don’t fault him for Hemingway killing himself.

But the cult of Hemingway’s writing is that while his major accomplishment of writing simply is part of the appeal of Hemingway, you can honestly lose a lot if you don’t pay attention and stop reading Hemingway just to get to the end of a book report.

What would make Hemingway racy and controversial during his heyday would not really matter to most modern readers anymore. Hell, the Marquis De Sade had his own version of how to torment his characters to such an extent that most readers don’t even go near his fiction, like Justine or Salo. What makes Hemingway attractive is the simplicity of his work, but does that simplicity mean a lot if you are reading him for a book review/report and you don’t slow down to get the subtlety of his dialogue to understand the pain the characters go through.

My concern with Hemingway is not with the life of the writer in question. I don’t care about what he did in the past or outside of his writing to consider him a great writer. He was a hunter, womanizer, drunk, but does this really concern the argument in question.

The cut of Hemingway is concerned with a a simplicity that often now is not even cared for anymore, or it’s disregarded in fiction. Simplicity is fine if you don’t have all the time in the world. Most difficult writers are ignored for the sake of a writer who writes simply. Hell if that’s true, James Patterson is avant garde and daring. Which he is not.
What Hemingway’s writing, whoever was inspired by it, would introduce a mediocre quality. A best seller list of authors who are about as anonymous names that you could pull out of a phone book. Hell, simplistic clear writing doesn’t guarantee you money or wealth anymore. Nor does a writers difficulty mean that he’s a literary genius. What Hemingway did introduce with his simplicity is what can not be duplicated.

While I’m more of a Conrad, Kipling, and Pynchon fan, I do see why Hemingway is revered by book readers in general. But that doesn’t mean anyone who followed in Hemingway’s footsteps is a genius either.

Cormac McCarthy is the only one who might be able to wear the title of a most difficult but widely read writer who has a mass appeal, just like Hemingway.

While I do see there is a cult and fascination with the past, and trying to cancel someone like Hemingway would undo the years of commercial writing, Hemingway’s simplicity can be seen as a crutch, if not paying attention.

A question in some of my reviews, when I don’t get it is, “How can someone write so simply yet obfuscate the direction the writer is heading in.” That’s like taking Lovecraft’s weird warped vision but making it accessible, but still dense. It takes a genius to do that sort of writing, but Hemingway’s simplistic technique is why so many people like him.

I’m not coming down on Hemingway at all. I read like all young people Old Man and the Sea, and I thought it was important. But the overall starch quality of writing today can’t compare to the painful observations Hemingway adds in much of his work. Most would rather trade substance for starch, with writers like Dan Brown and James Patterson, taking accessibility, but allowing speed to take over for substance. Just because a book is fast doesn’t mean it deserves awards, fame, or monetary recognition.

Commercial writers can use both starch and substance and create really effective work. David Mitchell proves to make difficult work while writing simply and with a commercial appeal. A reader, and critics could confuse John Irving’s books reminiscent of Hemingway, but Irving is more of a Dicken’s fan, as Dickens used heavy emotion within a grand tapestry. Hemingway sacrificed much of a grand tapestry for a sparse declarative sentence. Irving relies on comedy and drama, but not just drama entirely.

It’s hard for me to consider Hemingway a great writer when he was a better editor. Dickens loved long sentences while Hemingway did not, which comes from his background in journalism.

I do think Hemingway did leave a legacy but those who copied his style do not do his legacy any favors, but also, how trite it can be, too.

Don Quixote: A Review

3 Apr

-For the Uncensored!

Orson Welles 1992 film version that never made it to a theatrical release.

Don Quixote, by Miguel Cervantes, “but with Part 2 appeared ten years later mysteriously by an author named Avellaneda” proves that the story of Don Quixote is as much part of the oral tradition as well as literary. Edith Grossman, the translator for much of Latin America’s superstar writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez notes, in the 2003 edition, “I believe that my primary obligations as a literary translator is to recreate for the reader in English the experience of the reader in Spanish. When Cervantes wrote Don Quixote, it was not yet a seminal masterpiece of European literature, the book that crystallized forever the making of literature out of life and literature, that explored in typically ironic fashion, and for the first time, the blurred and shifting frontiers between fact and fiction, imagination and history, perception and physical reality, or that set the stage for all Hispanic studies and all serious discussion of the history and nature of the novel.”

I think everyone who reads the prologue, the first sentence reads, “Idle reader: Without my swearing to it, you can believe that I would like this book, the child of my understanding, to be the most beautiful, the most brilliant, and the most discreet that anyone could imagine. But I have not been able to contravene the natural order; in it, like begets like. And so what could my barren and poorly cultivated wits beget but the history of a child who is dry, withered, capricious, and filled with inconstant thoughts never imagined by anyone else, which is just what one would expect of a person begotten in a prison, where every discomfort has its place and every mournful sound make its home?!”

This opening paragraph is the most teasing way a writer can tease to his reader, “I’m probably one of the best writers in the world and there is nothing you can do to stop me.

Terry Gilliam’s realized version of a botched film he tried to make but the budget never came through until 2019.

As much of this can illustrate a finer point of Don Quixote, it proves that while much of Don Quixote is meant to be sardonic in nature, many would argue that modernity is relative to the geographic location of readers. Macondo, the fictional world of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, is much a mystery to readers in America and Europe.

What I gathered in my journey with the Man of La Mancha, is that the primary theme of virtue was Don Quixote’s last and final stand.

Now, at every page, it was telling me to quit. It was almost punching me at every page to say, “You have read Proust, Melville, Sarte, Conrad, Marquez, Burgess, Nabokov, but this is the book that is going to defeat you. I am the master of all who have come before me.” I could feel Cervantes laughing at the modern reader, as he should, but even so, learning about Cervantes does help me decipher out my emotions toward the book. And I think it works. Andrew Klevan would argue that “Hamlet is the birth of the modern man” but every country and person has there own specificity about who is modern or not. What makes modernity is that each culture has to create a slice of culture to be able to rival literary hero’s so that I can push a country’s boundaries, and the more difficult a book was, it also makes the book a challenge to any reader.

Again, as much as I enjoy difficult books, Don Quixote did a damn good job of providing a challenge, and the insanity of the story even showed at page 156, when Sancho is begging to know the reason of his journey. I would have told Sancho “Run, unless you are getting health insurance, leave.”

Don Quixote is a reminder why epics are called epics. If video gamers are reading this, and you love open world games, Cervantes invented the word “side quests.” Not literally but I’m being facetious. It’s long, and dense, and it will make you consider why you read books in the first place.

Cervantes, like many writers of the past, did not take into account the modern reader, because as Grossman describes, “his language was not archaic and quaint” but translators help bring an ancient book to new life. But even Grossman declares the originality of the book is what attracts people to Cervantes, and herself.

What is ironic is that when piecing together my thoughts, it’s probably best described as “Goddamnit Sancho just give up on him.”

Much of the narration gives more weight to Sancho, and the irony of having to help Don Quixote is much like a social worker trying to calm down an old person. But Don Quixote seems fully aware of his foolish antics. It’s about going mad while consciously aware of it. And the reader, might not get it at first, the power and humor of Don Quixote can be described with the phrase, “You love me because I am handsome and I love you because you are ugly.”

What’s funny is that I said to myself, “Where the fuck are these windmills?” Then I kind of got that filmmakers always used the windmill analogy too much to summarize the whole journey of Don Quixote, and couldn’t tell each moment in the book.

It’s one of the most hilarious lines in the novel, but also gives us the sense that Cervantes had no road map as to where he was going. Much of the episodic nature of the first part is important to the way Cervantes uses Don Quixote as the last and final push against old age and death.

Don Quixote, is often outmatched at fights, and funny enough, he knows when to run away. It’s hilarious and often times had me thinking, “What do you have to prove to Dulcinea, lord Simp meister Quixote.”

And many of the young will laugh, but what would you do for an Instagram influencer model just to notice you? I mean, did you ever just jump up and down because you were happy? Don Quixote does this in order to feel alive, but at least he’s driven by love, and not hate. Would you do that for an Instagram or tiktok influencer, or someone you cared about, in real life, or just chase after someone you couldn’t have?

I know the phrase “simp” is popular today, but for Quixote, he would have acted like a boomer and scoffed, gestating that “I’m doing this for love of my Dulcinea” and even if I were Sancho would say, “Whatever you say, Boomer.” But also, I hate to break it to people is that Dulcinea is a figment of love and the way Dante seeks Beatrice in Hell.

But after a while I saw Quixote as someone I wanted to help too, but I was glad Sancho was doing all the work.

Mostly, it’s a journey within a journey, and many characters, like the Knight of the Sorrowful Face, proves that Cervantes wrote this in order to create the episodic and the poetic together.

Because by the second part, much of the narrative focuses on Sancho as he and the Knight of the Sorrowful Face make up much of the narrative with Don Quixote, and to me, this story was more about Sancho. Much of the later narrative doesn’t really coincide with the first part, as the first and second parts are meant to be read as two separate books. As if you are reading part 1, 2, and 3, of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings in one whole narrative, but divided in separate stories. The endlessness of the story, helping characters along the way created a sense of honor and devotion, to being a knight.

It begs the question: “Why read this book anyway? What do you gain to prove by this?” And the answer I would give is, “Because you can’t push a button all the time and think you are gaining knowledge. Knowledge must be earned, not pressed on a controller. You don’t reload a gun in real life with pressing X or Y. Books are meant to sit with the author and see what is produced through language, and while much of Quixote is earned through reading, your brain will thank you. Yes, your brain. The thing you complain of others not using. Not everything should be an algorithm crated by companies with watered down entertainment for you to decide haphazardly and naively that ‘it’s okay’ without giving yourself over to an author or entertainers demands.”

Now, don’t be insulted what I have said. Much of literature is about earning your right to read the book again. I guess this is a diversion, because much of Don Quixote is meant to be a challenge, and if you want challenging books, Don Quixote by Miguel Cervantes is the one for you.

Ultimately I was not defeated by the book as Cervantes promised, but it’s the celebration of the epic that pulled me in. Much of what I read would have to be re-read again, and that’s the joy of books, and any piece of entertainment. It’s not difficult for difficulty’s sake. It’s meant to challenge and give you depth and appreciation.

By the end, the read is conscious of Don Quixote and his dreams.

“Here lies the mighty Gentleman

who rose to such heights of valor

that death itself did not triumph

over his life with his death. He did not esteem the world;

he was the frightening threat

to the world, in this respect,

for it was his great good fortune

to live a madman, and die sane.”

It ultimately proved my point I thought when I was reading this, and all I could feel was respect and honor for Don Quixote, as he wanted to live his life how he wanted to. I should feel pity and sorrow, but I was glad to take this journey with Sancho, Don Quixote, and all the characters he meets along the way. I don’t have this regret, and the book still sits on my desk like someone that can’t leave my attention. Like it deserves another read.

The only criticism I have for the book is that if you really want to read the book, I would say get a hard cover edition so that the font is bigger, but then again, just take your time, and accept it. But still, however you read it, digital or print, it’s a classic for a reason.

Final Analysis: 4 out of 5 windmills

Marvel and Shakespeare: Who would have thought?

30 Mar

-For the Uncensored!

It’s not like Marvel films haven’t been the craze for the last ten years, and while the films are not what I would watch, and aren’t as important to me, it’s interesting to find out that the same publishers who wrote the joke Star Wars Shakespeare books, are now behind this new publication. According to Marvel.com, “This September 28, all four Avengers films (Marvel Studios’ The AvengersAvengers: Age of UltronAvengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame) will be presented, by Quirk Books, as Shakespearean plays in the ultimate treasury for Marvel fans — William Shakespeare’s Avengers: The Complete Works.” (https://www.marvel.com/articles/culture-lifestyle/william-shakespeare-avengers-complete-works-mcu-quirk-books) Again, Marvel, parterning with Quirk Books, has always found a way to adapt to the culture, but even so, with much of Marvel leaning into SJW momentum and the writers they employ, I am pessimistic to think that Marvel can pull this rabbit out of there hats.

Marvel are probably the last people to try and blend Shakespeare into there work, but the next sentence defines the Western world. Shakespeare is the epitome of Western literature, and Marvel is smart to help kids try and get into Shakespeare, and without it, they might be able to stop the oncoming wave of censorious academics who think that Shakespeare was a “racist” and whatever buzz word that they can epitomize.

The power of Shakespeare still is why people are weirdly attracted to the Bard, and no matter what society will try to do, no one can stop the power of William Shakespeare. I just hope they don’t get censored by some fat overweight pear shaped academic who thinks that they are being racist by basing there work on William Shakespeare.

I guess my ire falls on the same people who haven’t been able to produce a single good comic in over a decade. Somehow, Zach Snyder, director of 300, Watchmen, and the recently released Snyder Cut of Justice League, is now a master of cinema, but here’s to hoping that Snyder manages to make Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead. It’s possible. But again, I have doubts over what Marvel can do anymore, but I’m hoping they don’t ruin Alien in the process.

Art and Culture 31: Dante Aligheri Vs. Shakespeare

29 Mar

-For the Uncensored!

It’s always a odd debate when you pit Dante Alighieri and Shakespeare against one another. There’s always a cringe factory brewing on a legacy media site, like The Guardian, that wants to create conversation about which dead author is better. The Guardian states, “In a comment piece in Frankfurter Rundschau, Arno Wildmann wrote that even though Dante “brought the national language to great heights”, Italian schoolchildren struggled to understand the antiquated verse of his Divine Comedy, which was written in 1320.

The epic poem, which is split into three parts and traces a pilgrim’s journey through hell, purgatory and heaven, was written in the vernacular Tuscan dialect to make it accessible to the masses, instead of Latin. His choice had such a great impact on writers at the time that the Tuscan dialect formed the basis for modern Italian, hence why the poet is known as “the father of the Italian language.” (https://www.theguardian.com/books/2021/mar/29/italians-defend-dante-from-claims-he-was-light-years-behind-shakespeare)

It’s almost a comment as to the southern writers and who really added more dialect to the southern writers oeuvre, as whether Faulkner, Flannery O Connor, and to be honest, Cormac McCarthy, who everyone thinks is a southern writer, is not by birth. He is merely a transplant to Texas.

Dante, according to Wildmann, “was beholden to French medieval troubadours, the poet-musicians who wrote verses on love. “One important difference tends to be overlooked,” Wlidmann wrote. “The troubadours were pop singers, of whose masterpieces only the lyrics survive; Dante aimed to achieve the same effect – without music. He always felt in competition.”

Now considering the idea that Dante was in competition with anyone is beyond me because in the 1300’s Dante did not have Internet access. Yes, this may be an unfair point, it proves to me that anyone could make this argument if one was so willing, and if Dante was inspired by any outside influence, those influences had to be found by local distributors who allowed Dante access to read the French troubadours.

It’s mostly about access, and not about whether Dante was in outright competition. To assert that Shakespeare was light years beyond Dante seems Wildman wants to create controversy rather than make real valid points between the two authors.

But between Dante and Shakespeare, it’s a debate of how two cultures see there writers as more dominant in the overall culture of writers and how they both offered different skills. Shakespeare. Shakespeare was an actor and Wildman’s reaction is like intellectual dick wagging at who is the better writer or not.

I would argue that Dante and Shakespeare totally incomparable. Dante was a poet while Shakespeare was a bard, or playwright. It’s typical that Europeans are fighting about this, when we all know American literature is the best.  As Shakespeare said, “To thine ownself be true,” in Hamlet, and I think both writers are both great in there own respects (personally, I would say Paradise Lost by Milton is better than Dante, but that’s for another article).  This is a reminder why when trying to compare two completely different writers, in both form and style, doesn’t always make the best argument.

Stop Being Woke and Wake Up!

15 Mar

-For the Uncensored!

In the ongoing battle for freedom of speech and Amazon’s decision to ban books, according to an WSJ opinion article, the author, Gary Kaplan states, on February 25th, 2021, states that “Mein Kampf is still for sale” when Amazon will ban Ryan T. Anderson’s book “When Harry became Sally.” Here he reflects on his past, “My two Romanian maternal uncles were taken away to concentration camps in Transnistria, and survived. They were forced to dig mass graves. My mother, now almost 102 years old, hid out through World War II, and was nearly killed several times. She remembers how it all began: riots in the streets, censorship, scapegoating and the dissolution of laws.” He then states, “stop being Woke, and wake up.”

When Mr. Kaplan chatted with the Amazon representatives, they sent him a link to the original movie 1980’s film, when Harry met Sally, and to bypass Amazon ordered the book from Mr. Anderson’s publisher website “Encounter, at a reasonable price with a 15% first-time discount to boot. It is possible to wean ourselves from Amazon dependency (74 million people voted against tech censorship in November), and until we do, Amazon and its ilk will exercise the power we cede to them.”

I guess the tendency to exclude wrong think is always the final push toward censorship. It’s the utopia that liberals want that will fail. Being nice to each other is not going to guarantee happiness. The problem is Amazon are a huge global market, and today, it’s worse when people think they can control what people read and think. I think the animosity most have to say is worse when you think being polite is for the common good.

If we can’t have weird thoughts, then maybe it’s time people stopped selling books on Amazon. I think it’s because the marketplace wants and demands every book be sold on all major platforms. Well, the thing is, if the problem is about not exposing people to wrong think, it would mean not saying what the other side thinks. Maybe liberals want to ban everything because they have no more rebuttals. They don’t want to talk about the true source of Nazism and socialism. Liberal parents don’t have a response to this notion anymore. They are embedded back to the source of being outright socialist commies. It’s a parent that tries to coddle a child that becomes the  worst brat you have seen. Because they know how to push their parents buttons. They have no choice but to hide the world, when the child already knows what their friends tell them.

It’s hard for me to take Amazon seriously when they don’t have legs to stand on. It’s either you believe in freedom of speech, or none at all. I guess Amazon doesn’t believe in Ryan T. Anderson’s, or my, words at all. If they won’t woke up, America might head to an unbelievable nightmare. If you deny the right to free speech, you deny yourself the ability to talk or publish what you think. Overall, Mr. Kaplan is right, and his thoughts are still his own, and admirable in the state of censorship happening in America 1984. Sorry, I mean, 2021.

Alien comics land into Marvel (with worry)

13 Mar

-For the Uncensored!

Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujtcRKToClc

It must be said that when I heard that there was a new alien comic series, and then it was being created by Marvel, I think my heart sank a little. Considering the future of Marvel being female, which I don’t mind. I will cover that in another article, but that topic alone could derail us from the idea itself. Alien, written by Dan O Bannon and Steve Schusett, was a series that started off in 1978, and has moved on to its 42nd year as one of the major sci-fi franchise that’s not afraid to handle personal topics and put it into a large dark sci-fi landscape. It’s a reminder that not all sci-fi franchises have to be like Star Wars. Encompassing directors like Ridley Scott, James Cameron, and even David Fincher, Alien has proved to be a cult classic that hasn’t really died.

The “Alien Franchise quickly expanded into video games, comics, novels and even action figures. Regarding this mélange of media, there have been some stand-out successes. The Dark Horse Universe of Alien comics has existed since the late ’80s.” (https://www.thepostathens.com/article/2021/03/alien-is-an-undying-franchise-video-games). I don’t really agree that the Alien Franchise had “duds” but it does mean that the Alien franchise is a very versatile series that can match a vision it wants to make, and while many have there favorites, Marvel can expand there adult wings with there new Alien run.

The plot seems simple: “The series centers on Gabriel Cruz, a Colonial Marine who barely survived an encounter with the Xenomorphs. Cruz is trying to patch up his relationship with his son, but the threat of the Xenomorphs comes back to haunt him.” I would love to say I’m excited, but also worried that Marvel might not go into the darkness to find there thesis. Even Batman Vs. Alien was an extraordinary comic, and still is one of the best batman cross overs ever. Also, I love Alien Vs. Predator, too.

Philip John Kennedy will pen the series, as he proclaims, “When Marvel announced the series, Kennedy said, “Just as a reader and fan, I was as excited as anyone when I heard the franchise was coming to Marvel, and when they asked me to WRITE THE LAUNCH, I was floored. I’ve been training my whole life for this gig without knowing it. Ever since seeing Ridley Scott’s Alien at way too young an age, I’ve been OBSESSED with the xenomorph, the single most iconic representation of terror on film.” (https://www.animationxpress.com/comics/marvel-reveals-first-look-of-the-comic-series-alien/. Found on 03/12/21.)

Some could argue the fourth film didn’t help the Alien franchise, but it did bring a center to Ellen Ripley’s character. The Alien prequels, Prometheus and Alien Covenant, were polarizing for audience and critics, but I still say it brought Ridley back into the fold, incorporating ideas that nobody touched upon in the Alien franchise. Studying the idea of where we come from as human beings.

What does this mean for Marvel studios, as Marvel is more family friendly than Alien could be. With successes like Dead Pool and Logan, it helped Marvel explore the idea of having more adult themed movies in there catalogue.

If Disney and Marvel are smart, they will keep Alien for adults. It’s a series that has always evolved but seemed to find the center of what it means to be human in desperate circumstances. If Disney and Marvel are smart, which I hope going in, forces them to keep more adult themed topics in the Alien, and according to animantionexpress.com, “the predator series” it could be a treasure trove for Marvel to find there footing and appeal to the older audience while they manage to find footing for the rest of there planned series. I hope they don’t mess this up, but since Marvels failed television and movies not generating any interest, Alien might be the trump card to save Marvel.

Art and Culture # 24: Profits over Product

11 Mar
podcast available now!

-For the Uncensored!

In the comic book, and entertainment industry, as a whole, has fostered many creative people. Frank Miller, Alan Moore, and there are so many other talented people in the entertainment world that have to remain relevant but also many who find their own pleasure in serving a niche crowd. If the worst thing to take away from this article, or piece, is that “everyone is a scumbag in the industry.” There are, and we all know their names. They are numerous and they have all verified twitter check marks. It’s insane to me that comics and entertainment would only focus on profits, which means cutting down the artistry and craft behind many artistic endeavors. Sometimes writers forsake a weird sentence, or purple prose, for something more direct. If purple prose offends anyone, don’t read books. But the direct nature of books and how everything must be scripted into one unilateral form, is part way a death in Art and Culture.

What is more upsetting is that profits are intertwined with the way the culture blows. If the industry sees that people aren’t reading comics anymore, they will cut back supply and demands. If books, the more difficult ones, are not given the proper edification as say best sellers do, then that’s not artistic balance, it’s profits over product.

If you think that we are living in dark days with censorship, this has been going on for a long time. Libraries often have many banned book weeks as they tally up all the books censored all over the world. But this is not just about celebrating banned literature, but also celebrating books that are often difficult to find. If profits are what companies only think about, then why would anyone ever write anything risqué? Who would ever want to read risqué books when some of them don’t recoop the cash.

Usually if a book is difficult, you finish it and read it again. The power dynamic of a book can appeal to taste over time. Sometimes profitable stories are not built over one big hit. Blade Runner is a classic because it has managed to breathe in the culture of movies, and Philip K. Dick has become so well know, but during his life he was poor.

He ate dog food. Yes, his own mother paid his way until he died. I think it must have been terribly difficult for Philip K. Dick. He was unappreciated and died poor, but the legacy of a creators work sometimes is beyond the control of a company profit. Is profit really controlled by a company that wants someone to be successful or does profit matter more? With Dan Brown, profit matters morel but his legacy falls short.

It’s not always about profit. Most people who write books never get famous or rich, and loneliness and the willingness to cast aside a job just to be able to write, or paint a picture, doesn’t mean you will get rich. I think it puts a strain on marriages, and it hurts when a partner doesn’t make money. If the wife is fine with it, like Frank Herbert’s wife, the six year gamble paid off and Dune, after being rejected by nearly everyone, was published by Chilton, an auto mechanic guide. I shit you not. This actually happened. The first run hardcover edition is a priceless book and if kept in good condition, is worth more than 25 thousand dollars.

That is one story of how profit and a writer’s vision was met by the world and embraced by the general public. So, there are countless stories of how profit never works out for a writer in the short term. Most famously, Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, was a failure when finished, and it was derided for much of what modern readers can fault it for. It rambled. Most people who read Moby Dick feel a kindred spirit with it, often never have friends to share it with. But it’s the book that every American should read. Melville delivered a book that far outlived the authors time but a cult of group readers kept the book alive, and in bookstores for years since then. It proves that a book doesn’t have to sell to hold a lasting legacy to American literature. Profit sometimes doesn’t matter, but in a way, profit is a nice addition. It helps create the stereotype that “you failed, now get a real job.”

A lot of writers have committed suicide over never getting published, hell, Leaving Las Vegas, starring Nicholas Cage and Elizabeth Shue (in my humble opinion Shue and Marisa Tomei are two women that still look great despite there age), was about a failed alcoholic writer who decided to go on a drinking binge and living with a prostitute. Writers, and even myself included, think the fame and profit will make the personal problems go away. It never does. That’s a lie told to the masses. It’s the oldest lie told to people who don’t write books.

Novels, painting, comics, are not just products, they are products of the imagination, to bring us out of sadness and chaos, as to understand what humans need when all is gone. When it’s all taken away, then you have no history of Art and the beauty of how damaged and fucked up but beautiful human beings really are. And that’s worth remembering.

Art and Culture # 23: The Art of the Message

11 Mar

-For the Uncensored!

Ah, the message. A message, by definition, has meant so many forms of expression over time. It went from the oral, cave, and when literacy entered into humanity’s sphere, writing and letters, were then used as a means of letting people know what they are thinking. Then when communication, and especially novels were definitely apart of the way the world communicated and how the Art of the Message took to many outlooks of expression into the modern era. Pigeons were still a very popular way of spreading messages, and if a pigeon came, it was either a sign of distress or love. As the Industrial Revolution took place, we had the birth of the telegram, which you could tap messages to express yourself, but it was used by businesses, and was limited to regular people being able to communicate or spread a message. You could consider the Turing Test as a means of communicating decrypted messages that helped the Allies in WW II achieve victory against the Axis coded communication. It seemed like a new breakthrough in communication and the messages a machine like Turing created enhanced our way of communication to what we had later on. In the modern era, there were fax machine, pagers, cell phones, smart phones, SMS, e-books, Social Media and text messaging. All are now our ways of reaching forms of communication and helping family and loved ones stay informed about family health, and happiness, but also allow businesses to communicate their message to the public. Computers and iPad also allow individuals to state their opinions and address important sales of art, or let people contact them in order to purchase an individual’s books, art, or anything they have to sell.

Now, why bring up the history of communication? Art has always relied on a form of communication. Communication is intermingled with Art, and how we read, write, draw, and understand the world we live in. Art and messages have never been that far away from our imagination. When we see the Pieta, sculpted by Michelangelo built during 1495-1499, to represent the pain of the Blessed mother holding Jesus after he was crucified. It’s a majestic sculpture if you are at the Vatican. It is one of the zenith Renaissance sculptures that depict a classical form of a message to the beauty and pain. But with pain is a message. I know that most people “don’t want a message” in things, but the lack of a message in art is never going away.

It can be woven into the art, as the “ideology can meld with the aesthetics.” No art is without a message, and it can be communicated in any form where art is represented.

Although communication is represented with artistic forms, while anger, can also be a form of communication in art, too. If that wasn’t allowed, there would be no transgressive art forms to help channel our deep psychological nerve endings to calm down our primitive side of life. Now, saying that art leads to violence is not a thing. If people are inspired by the art to commit violence, who is really to blame? Is the artist a good communicator and is in touch with the primitive side, or the person who can’t ration what is separated between a book, film, or game? Sometimes artists can be too good at communicating pain and sometimes the participant thinks the art they are taking is talking to them.

This has happened, to me too, but I don’t start acting out the fantasy of violence in real life because the art itself does it anyway. If you wanted to ban a book, like Catcher in the Rye, it’s not that it pushes anyone toward violence, as many like Chapman, said before, quoting the book in his testimony.

As an aside, I would ban Catcher in the Rye because it was boring and overrated. I mean, the kid just runs away from school, says a few curse words, and then disappears. I’m kidding, but you get the gist. Also, I would never want to ban Catcher in the Rye because I want people to see how boring and overrated it is.

But is the writer, filmmaker, or painter, is good at communicating violence, anger, rage, does that mean the art is to blame at how effective it is, or if it’s not, should it be left alone? Does subtlety make up a big portion of how we see violence and the world presented in any art form. So is the message of violence so important to remind people it’s bad. I don’t think we needed exposition phrases uttered on paintings from HR Giger to represent the horror and unknowable of aliens. Does a message written on a beautiful painting say less or more when the pictures don’t need words. Paintings can escape tedious messages, but it’s what you see in the painting to represent your own thoughts.

In stories and fiction, exposition has sometimes added more to the conversation, and sometimes, mystic conversation can help bring an air of mystery to the text you are reading. Not everything has to be didactic, like the bible, but sometimes descriptions help portray the message of a landscape. Sometimes beauty doesn’t need many words to communicate what the world needs to know.

But is being explicit help either? It all depends on what an individual sees in the art they are ingesting. No matter if it is violence, beauty, or tragedy, a message can hep guide us through personal turmoil and get rid of our frustration, and communication, through art forms, rely on audience participation too. But if art is taken away because that art is effective, then that’s another worse sign in society, too. What message does that create?

Cowboy Graves: A Review

9 Mar

For the Uncensored

Robert Bolano is a figure that many writers often look to, and I hold as one of the greatest Chilean writers of his day, but like many writers, Bolano started off as a poet, and he became a writer to pay the bills for his family. Robert Bolano was born in Chile 1953 and passed away in Spain in 2003. The power of reading a writer, and all his work is realizing what is good or not. But I never mount that type of hype on a writer that aims to do something different every time. There’s so many great works by Bolano, which to me, is 2666, A Little Lumpen Novella, Nazi Literature in America, The Savage Detectives, The Third Reich, The Romantic Dogs, are all great works of Bolano that I hold dear. But there’s something clear when a publisher starts to release the writer’s posthumous work. It’s the work that Bolano never got to publish during his lifetime, and publishers don’t usually publish a writer in his entirety unless there’s profit to earn. Much of a writer’s life is built in secrecy and much of Bolano’s life is probably more myth than fact.

It seemed like poverty forced Bolano to write fiction, but Cowboy Graves, three novellas, proves when a writer is trying less complicated versions of his stories, in novellas, to achieve the same goals a longer novel would then create. Atmosphere and mood are sacrificed in novellas to attain a purity of the plot. “Cowboy Graves” shows an example of how a character is looking for his father, but in that amount of time, he’s just moving from place to place, until he meets communists. And when asks what a communists “looks like,” they provide an answer. It seems that Bolano is full well of what fascism means, and honestly, when Europeans speak of fascism, they honestly hide the fact about the different branches of fascism too, and where socialism comes into play.

But there’s a line that does speak to me out of the whole novella. “What use is a gun if it’s not loaded.”

I think the way this line is a reminder of being in danger, and being unloaded makes you think about the uselessness of a gun when it’s not loaded. Bolano is gifted with normal everyday perceptions that remind of me of Don Delillo. Simple, yet elegant, and deadly. So, I think Cowboy Graves, the first novella, is the major stand out between French Comedy of Horrors, and Fatherland. The last two novellas. Fatherland does remind me of a simpler version of the Third Reich.

Then for some odd reason the book seems to be almost delving into itself, as there no rising arc or consequence to any of the characters actions throughout the book. No one learns anything. In the afterward, explains that for “Bolano it’s always about the journey rather than the conclusion.”

Sometimes Bolano stories are a yarn that’s immediately cut off when it was just getting good. But the journey is re-reading it again, and you could almost deny his writing as being too subtle, but you have to pay attention to it in order to get the finer points. Sometimes it can be mystifying, but in Buddhism, the journey is what’s important. Maybe there is more left to Bolano’s career that has yet to be published still.

            Final Verdict: 3/5
